Member Posts: 859 Location: Appleton wi | Reports have been alittle slow on this new wisconsin river section so here's a report on yesterday action.Decided to try petenwell midsummer with a good friend who lives 1.5hours south of petenwell and that was the best place i know half way and he was anxios to take a ride in my tuffy and get out for day! We started out the morning in almost dead calm conditions jigging/slip bobbering and throwing cranks on points and drop offs on midlank and north end. Marked alot of fish but we caught absolutly nothing. HIGHlite of the morning was watching 10-50's schools of carp chasing females on the surface. By noon we decided it was time to troll and worked the river channel and slowly worked are way closer to shore.Found fish in 14-8fow and managed to pull 4 nice walleyes17-19" and nice 13" crappie. It was a beautiful day on the water and my good friend and i got a rare chance to spend some quality time together and even though i would consider it was a very slow day and he was one happy camper to take home 5 nice fish for his family!Steve added this wisconsin section after some request so let get a few more post on here by some of you guys who requested it!

Member Posts: 8 | I'm thinking about heading there the last weekend of April with my dad to fish below the dam, but I've never fished this area before. I'm a little hesitant to take my boat out since I really don't trust rivers much. Therefore, I was wondering how dangerous the river is in this area as far hitting something, and how fast is the current right now. If the river is too risky in the boat we might just go from shore. Are there any back waters/slack water area near the dam to possibly make casting for some smallies easier out of the boat. If we do go from shore I'd appreciate any heads up on a place to start out at. Thanks for helping out a newbie. The Wanderer

The river below Nekoosa is usually pretty decent. Below the Petenwell dam, you have to worry about concrete pilings from the bridge as well as a lot of shallow water. There is a good chance that the river bite will still be going strong there in a few weeks. It should be a good time. Good Luck

Member Posts: 8 | Thanks GNWC Rookie. We might just go from shore on the east side of the river below the dam. I figured the fishing should still be pretty good. Maybe it won't be on fire with monsters hopping in the boat, but then again you never know.

Member Posts: 859 Location: Appleton wi | Greg if you have boat i would take it and fish the half mile below the dam up river of petenwell. You will probally find that the shorelines will be packed by other fellow shore fisherman. If you take a boat and like to long lining lures thats the place to be and throwing cranks work great! Member Posts: 8 | Thanks eye lunker. So fish the entire half mile below the petenwell dam. Right. Down river past the bridge must be a relatively safe area then. When you are talking about throwing crankbaits, how deep running type cranks are you talking? Thanks again. Greg

Member Posts: 8 | Well, the weather on Saturday was downright terrible. 35 degrees, 30 mph winds, and snow flurries. Only stayed in the boat for about 4 hours. Trailered the boat and decided to fish from shore out of the wind. We ended up with about 3 dozen walleyes on Saturday with only one being a keeper, and caught another dozen on Sunday with only one keeper again. All fish were caught on a jig and minnow. Nothing fancy.
