Member Posts: 127 | I SPENT SOME TIME LAST WINTER READING A BOOK BY GREG BOHN. (MR.SLIP BOBBER) AFTER FINISHING HIS BOOK I DECIDED I WAS GOING TO FOLLOW EVERYTHING I READ TO A TEE. I BOUGHT HIS GLASS BEADS, HIS HOOKS, BOUGHT THE THILL PRO SERIES FLOATS. I STARTED TYING A BUNCH OF 24" LEADERS WITH 6# VANISH MONO. I ADDED THE SMALL GOLD AND SILVER COLORADO SPINERS WITH THE CLEVISES, GLASS BEADS, AND A VARITY OF DIFFERENT STYLE HOOKS HE MENTIONS IN HIS BOOK. WHAT A SYSTEM!! IT'S NOT YOUR RUN OF THE MILL SLIP BOBBER RIG. THIS RIG WORKS. I'VE SLIP FLOATED OVER THE YEARS BEFORE BUT AFTER READING HIS BOOK I REALLY DIDN'T HAVE A CLUE WHAT I WAS DOING. THIS SUMMER I CAUGHT ALOT MORE WALLEYES THAN I'VE CAUGHT BEFORE. I ONLY CHANGED ONE THING FROM HIS SET UP AND I USE AN 1/8 TO 1/4 OZ. EGG SINKER INSTEAD OF THILL SOFT SHOT. I PUT THE EGG SINKER RIGHT ABOVE THE SWIVEL AND IT REALLY WORKS GOOD. NO TANGLES. I LIKE TO USE SWIVELS WITH BEARINGS AND I ALSO TIE SOME LEADERS 18'' AND 16". I BASICALLY HAD TO START SLIP FLOATING AND VERTICAL JIGGING BECAUSE I AM A C6 AND DON'T HAVE MUCH USE OF MY HANDS AND AM I A WHEELCHAIR. I BOUGHT A '07 G3 PONTOON TO FISH FROM AND DID A LITTLE MODIFIYING FOR MY CHAIR, BUT I'M SERIOUSLY LOOKING IN TO THE G3 V165F WITH THE 150 YAMMY. I'D LIKE TO HEAR IF ANYBODY ELSE OUT THERE LIKES TO SLIP FLOAT FISH AS MUCH AS I DO AND HOW YOU RIG UP .

Member Posts: 23 Location: Arlington, WI | I bought the book and read it cover to cover a few times plus notes. I use the rubber core sinkers so that I don't damage the line. The soft shot is strictly to fine tune balance the float/bobber. Don't feel obligated to use his overpriced glass beads. You can buy mountains of red glass round and facetted beads for the cost of one box of his. Glass beads have a very small diameter hole compared to the same sized plastic beads. I switched over to using the hi-vis pink stops and like them better. I personally don't like his choice of line. I have had much better results with a braided line mainline. The braided line goes through the bobber and beads better, no coils in the line, allowing the float/bobber to stand up faster, casts farther, pulls snags better, and it comes in hi-vis which you will understand when you use it. I bought some pink fireline to go along with my hi-vis yellow power pro mainline so that when a float goes down, I know which rod to grab. Also, try using Northland 1/16 oz Thumper Jigs with the built in spinners and 1/16 oz Fireball Jigs. Greg's set-up is good and it gives some good ideas to apply to other rigs. I still nose hook a few minnows and use a small, pencil eraser sized piece of Gulp to keep the minnow on the hook. I had better results with Greg's setups in the smaller norther Wisconsin lakes than I did on Mille Lacs. Just my opinion, Brian

Member Posts: 127 | BRIAN, I FOUND OUT THAT YES, YOU CAN BUY GLASS BEADS OTHER THAN FROM GREG AND YES, THEY WERE HIGH PRICED. I FOUND SOME AT OUR LOCAL FLEET-FARM, CHEAP. THE HI-VIZ PINK STOPS ARE WHAT I USE ALSO. I'M JUST NOT HAPPY USEING THE RUBBER CORE SINKERS WHEN I'M USEING LEECHES. I'VE HAD WAY TO MANY TANGELS AROUND THE WEIGHT BECAUSE THE LEECHES WILL SWIM UP AND THEY HAVE THE TWO RUBBER ENDS TO GET THE MESS STARTED. I ALSO USE NORTHLANDS 1/6 OZ. FIRBALL JIGS I USE A LEECH AND KEEP IT HORIZONTAL THE BEST I CAN AND WHEN I'M ON THE FISH I NAIL WITH THIS SET UP. LIKE I WROTE IN MY LAST POST I LIKE TO USE A 1/4 OZ. EGG SINKER BUT FORGOT TO SAY THAT I DO HAVE THE BOX OF SOFT SHOT JUST TO GET THE CENTER SLID FLOAT BALANCED JUST PERFECT. I REALLY LIKE THE THILL PRO SERIES FLOAT THE BEST BUT THATS JUST MY PREFRANCE MY BROTHER LIKES THE CENTER SLIDERS. WE HAVE ON THE AVERAGE 8 RODS SET UP ALL ALIKE EXEPT EVERYONE HAS A DIFFERNT HOOK SETUP. THANKS FOR YOUR POST I FOUND IT VERY INTERESTING. B.JAY

Member Posts: 127 | BDIRKS...... I HAVE ONE QUISTION, HOW DOES THE BOBBER STOP WORK ON THE HI-VIZ POWER PRO BRAIDED LINE? DOES IT SLIP UP AND DOWN ALOT WHEN YOU HAVE A FISH ON? I'M A DIE HARD TYLENE XL MONO MAN BUT WOULD LIKE TO TRY THE HI-VIZ POWER PRO. B.JAY

Member Posts: 23 Location: Arlington, WI | B. Jay, I haven't had any problems with slippage. I do not cut the tag ends of the stop once it is tightened. I never find myself having to re-tighten the stop. I agree with your opinion on the Pro Series floats. I also like the double ring slider floats from Thill but they can be harder to find. The wire rings really allow the line to flow freely through the float. With regard to your line of choice, if it works for you, run with it. I switched to braid because of 3 reasons. 1. It doesn't coil like mono, allowing it to slide through the float and bead better. 2. The two opposite Hi-Viz colors, Pink Fireline and bright Yellow Power Pro, let me easily tell which float on which rod is going down. I am going to spool up another rod with the new Red Power Pro so that I will have thee different colors to help me out with float identification. 3. The braided lines are much more rugged which is really nice in timber situations. Also, in my opinion the mono line has a different surface tension than braid which allows it to stick to the sides of the beads and the center of the float, here again slowing the fall of the bait. I believe Scheel's Walleye Pro John Candle posted up here once saying that he used braid for floats/bobbers. I tried it and I haven't looked back. Brian Edited by bdirks 9/27/2007 10:44 PM
