Bullhead, Yellow 3 lbs. 5 oz. 15.5 06/06/1983 Nelson Lake Sawyer

Above is the state record Yellow Bullhead.

Last week while trolling for Walleyes on the bay, we caught 3 large catfish in a row in the 10-12 lb range and then our 4th was smaller and a different color. After looking closely at this fish, both my fishing partner and I commented that the fish was a Yellow Bullhead.... I bumped it and it was 19 inches long.... Without much thought, we tossed it back into the water and kept fishing. I finished up work for the week and was planning my trips for next week and it got me thinking about that bullhead, so I checked the state records and discovered.....
We had a state record Bullhead in our boat that beat the record by3 1/2 inches, who knows what it weighed, but I'm sure it was larger than 3 lbs 5 oz. It is the only Bullhead I have ever caught on the Bay in the last 5 years.

I could have been on the cover on Bullhead Outdoors Magazine.

Back in da day, I'm guessing I cought about a 5#'er out of the rock river while we were catfishin'.....We ate it, since us kids were not worried about records at the time.

Bullheads in a Cajun creole sauce....don't knock it til ya tried it.

I caught what I thought was a huge bullhead on Poygan a few years back. It was yellow as yellow can be. It turned out to be a channel catfish. I have caught hundreds of channels before and never saw one that looked like this one. I am not saying that is what you had but 1 out of a 1000 are yellow.

We used to fish for Bullheads on Little Lake Butte des Morts every day of our summer vacation when were kids. Armed with a Zebco 22, 17 lb test line, all 30 yards that would fit and a handful of freshly dug garden worms. I hate to admit, but many met their match between 2 large rocks smashed together so we did not have to touch the slimy skin or get stung by their barbs.

I wish I would have know about the “Bullheads in a Cajun creole sauce”, I would have avoided fighting all my brothers for the last morsel of food on the table!

I must carry a lot of guilt with me... I won't even kill a Sheaphead these days!

I have an aunt that is originally from Louisianna, she'd make bullheads and catfish and crawdads. As kids we'd catch ice cream pail fulls of crayfish to be cooked up cajun style.

I'm headed back out to the bay tomorrow, if I catch that record Bullhead, I'm going to register him first and then go to Jasons house for dinner!
