What will this do to engine prices?

EPA sets new gas-engine emissions standards

Friday, 05 September 2008 10:01

The Environmental Protection Agency announced yesterday it has set strict new standards for gasoline engines.

When fully implemented, the rule is expected to yield annual emission reductions of 600,000 tons of hydrocarbons, 130,000 tons of nitrogen oxide, 5,500 tons of direct particulate matter and 1.5 million tons of carbon monoxide, according to the EPA. The agency also expects the new standards to save about 190 million gallons of gasoline each year.

The rule goes into effect in 2010 for a range of gas-powered personal watercraft and inboard and outboard engines, and in 2011 for lawn and garden equipment of 25 hp or less.

To meet the new emission standards, manufacturers likely will employ catalytic converters for the first time in many boats, according to the EPA. The regulation also includes the first national standards for boats powered by sterndrive or inboard engines, as well as carbon monoxide standards for gasoline engines.

As long as the EPA don't ask to monitor or put limitations on my personal toxic bodily emissions, I'll live with their other rules.

Man... I dunno if I buy those numbers they are throwing around on the emmission reduction.

They just give a number....
...compared to what?

There has already been a lot of savings of emmissions with the 4 stroke and direct injected 2 stroke engines.

It doesn't matter anyway. With China and India (about haf the world's people) playing "catch-up" they'll emit more than we can possibly effect.

It will mean more money, more weight, and more things to have to fix. There are no positives, except cleaner air which is a pretty good one, I guess.

It will mean lawnmower prices will be so high that anybody with a minimum wage job can afford an illegal immagrant to cut their lawn with a pair of scissors . Better start buying all the lawnmowers you can afford without cat converters. This pretty much eliminates the gas weed wacker and chain saw products.

Forgive me if I am wrong, but don't catalytic converters discharge small amounts of sulfuric acid? Wouldn't the addition of converters to marine engines make the effects of acid rain on fresh water species a lot worse?

I didn't think about the lawn. I guess we will just get a couple of sheep to keep the grass down. Of course the EPA will make us put diapers on the sheep etc.

Actually, many motors currently on the market meet/exceed the new standards. The outboard manufacturers saw this coming and have already adapted. Not that big of a deal.
