Ran into Walleye Hunter (Jimmy) in Franks, he was a long ways from his home near Detroit and had just came from the Saginaw River and was headed to Linwood Road. He didn't catch or see any walleyes caught while at the river. The river was very dirty and cloudy from all the recent SNOW run-off. Said the ice was 3 to 4 inches thick North of the I-75 Zillwauakee Bridge where he had fished for a short time. Talked to another bud WalleyeFishBoy (Duffy), who had talked to our other buddy, who lives right at the end of Linwood Road. According to a few groups of guys he talked to coming off the ice, the ice is 7 to 8 inches thick up to 3 miles out in 12 to 13 FOW. Also heard they are catching a few near the island at the mouth of the river, and also a few straight out from the Kawkawlin river, about 2 miles. Seen only 2 vehicles parked at the State Park, and visability looking out on the Bay, seemed to be about 100 yards. Personally, I'd stay clear of the mouth area for a while yet. The Hot-Ponds are just to close to that area for me to take the risk. Edited by walleye express 1/17/2004 10:24 AM

Member Posts: 22 Location: Bay City, MI | Dan, Perch fished off Palmer Rd. (Standish) the last two weekends. Not a lot going on up there. Was surprised to see this weekend that the recent snow has the ice all messed up. Even with a week of temps like we had, the ice was actually in better shape two weeks ago. A lot of slushy spots and more than one area of thin ice. I took the quad out, but didn't venture more than a half mile from shore. The friendly DNR officer said a lot of guys were taking quads out and so far, nobody's dropped though. Noticed a few shanties setup beneath the bridges in Bay City and was wondering if they're catching any walleye. I've also heard they've been walleye fishing by the marina near the mouth of the river (West side). Are you hearing any good news? The fishing seems strange this year and I'm having a hard time figuring out where they're at (perch or walleye).

Don't know how much you can gleem from them, as they are the one's of the rigs already bagged and ready to sell. I'm working on getting better pictures of it stretched out. I'm trying to get a stash of about 300 rigs to put in Franks Great Outdoors for the summer season for sale. I've sold maybe 100 so far just by word of mouth and inquirees. All to guys from Wisconsin, believe it or not. And FrozenBeer, the ice does get kinda weird when all this snow covers it so soon after freezing. But Palmer Rd. and places South to Ericson Rd. have always been prone to ice break/pile ups and water laying on top because of the many shallow shelfs and sand bars along that stretch of Bay. Even under ideal conditions, that stretch is always trecherous. As far as the Saginaw River goes, little walleyes and lots of them has been the norm all fall. And theres always guys around and near the old Defoes Ship Building area every winter. I've heard they do fairly good there on certain days. Those rigs are very simmular to the rigs I have been using for the last 3 years on Green Bay and LBDN and have slammed the fish the only difference is that I use a Michigan stinger spoon and some select others which will remain nameless.

Member Posts: 714 | Capt. Dan, I like the looks of those harnesses! In Minnesota we can only fish 1 line unless we are on the Mississippi where it is a boarder water with Wisconsin, and we can't use those as a slider with another bait on our line. So I wondering, when you say you use them on your mainline I'm assuming you are long lining, but was wondering if you have ever tried or would recommend them in a 3 way application. If so I might have to experiment with those this summer as a substitute for my normal spinner harnesses, which I work anywhere from .8 to 1.8mph. maybe 2 once in awhile.

Don't see why they wouldn't work just fine as the main lure off In-Lines or bigger planner boards, in conjunction with snap weights, off a three way with dropper, or even off a bottom bouncer. I built them both light and capeable of fast trolling speeds, to use as sliders and a extra lure off my mainline while running a crank below them, simply because I can do so leagally in Michigan.
