New User Posts: 3 Location: Eau Claire,WI | First time poster, long time lurker...I am going on a fly in trip in Canada,(Trout Lake), in late July,I am limited to how much weight I can have,as usual...My question is this, what lures would you bring? The lodge says 1/2 oz jigs, isn't that a bit too heavy? I must admit that I am a bit of a walleye rookie,I fish them a few weeks in the spring the go after the big ugly green things,(muskies). Any help in limiting my tacvkle is GREATLY appreciated. Paul

Member Posts: 538 | Paul, Just as a point of reference, the name fishing fool has long been the handle of Jim Kissinger who has been around this board for many years, but not much as of late. You might want to adjust the name as a courtesy. sorry I can't help you with your Canada trip. Take care, Jim O

Member Posts: 3899 | Jim, Paul is a convert from MuskieFirst. He's a Good guy, and has to fish for eyes now, as his neck and shoulder injury prevents him from casting for ski's. Jim has only posted 5 times as Fishin Fool, since 2002. Spelled without the 'g'. And Paul always signs off with Good Luck to All, so you will know who he is. I think there is room for both here. Paul, not familiar with Trout Lake. How big/deep is it? 1/2 Oz is really a big jig, but if you need to fish deep, and it's big water that can get riled up, you may need to go big to get the jig down and still feel it. Or, if you are fishing a fast/deep river. I think my best overall size jig in Canada has been the 1/8 oz. Sometimes when on the deeper(30') reefs on LOTW, I will go to 1/4 of 3/8 oz. Alot depends on the wind and waves. Best jig for me is the Fuzzy Grubs in Chart, Orange, White. The wife usually kicks my behind, and she only uses a Pink jig head with a chart twister tail. I just have a hard time using pink! LOL Have a great trip!

New User Posts: 3 Location: Eau Claire,WI | Shep,Thanks for the help and support,I couldn't have said it better! For those that don't know,I recently had 2 disks in my neck fused.I have some permanent nerve damage and am kind of struggling in my recovery.I will be ok,no doubt about that, just a bit slower than I had expected. The lake I will be on is big,90,000 acre, deep and clear,150 feet plus, over 100 islands to explore and get lost around. I do plan on useing 3/8 oz jigs and go smaller from there, depending on conditions. I guess what I am or wanted to ask is what lures would you bring, what types of structure should I plan on fishing for late July and how deep should I try? I realize I am asking a lot but I have never really tried for walleyes in the summer. I also plan on fishing lake trout and pike,I know where to get them, just not sure about ol' marble eyes. Thanks for any help! Paul

Member Posts: 26 | FishingFool, Many years ago my father took us to Trout Lake, just above Rainy Lake(Red Gut Bay). We portaged in and I was always the lucky crapper to have the honor and carry the 10 hp. Johnson on my shoulder. I think this is were my brother gave me the nickname "Bear"! If this is the same lake then I know where you are fishing. Anyways back then the fancy lures did not exist. For eye's we used 3-4 split shot 14" above a bait hook with minows. Straigt down, no locators just raw fishing! Times have changed so be open minded and adapt to this centuries presentation! The guide was great, knew the lake and produced fish daily under any conditions. For Lake Trout we used white bombers with a 1 1/2 ounce weight 2 feet above the bomber. Drop it "straight" to the bottom and then reel like a wild man! Back then, a glass rod 6' long, 8 lb. test mono, when the Laker hit it you bout' come out of the boat. The memories from these trips still brings goose bumps to the skin! For the toothy critters, we casted silver LurJenson spoons with a single hook mounted right to the spoon; casted right up to shore towards the reeds. It also had a weedless wire. 30 years ago the guide would cut the gullet out of the Pike and use it like pork rhine. This improved the catch ratio 300%. As a 12 year year old I am not sure this was legal, but even the guide broke all the rules in the book! If you use metal spoons for Lakers, do not use chrome down deep. Reason being is that the chrome looks like a black lure,so spend the extra money for a silver plated spoon! Gaurenteed to produce 100% better than chrome. We pounded the Lakers on Cliff Lake 4 years ago and the chrome did nothing! If white does not produce try a chartruse bomber or the like! Good luck and post your sucess's when you get back! BSCF! (BeSafeCatchFish) p.s. If old Bill Wilson is still alive, stay clear of this wild man, his son Kelly is a great guy!

Member Posts: 540 Location: Milw, WI | Ok, got to do this (I can not hold back any more.) If I had to eat fish to survive in Canada. I would take one lure, 2 colors. I would troll this lure on rocky areas , of shore sunken islands, at that time of year. This is what I did on the pack in trip 3 years back. Rapala deep down Huskie Jerks larger size. Colors.........gold and black, ten.shad. But take 2 of each, wore the lipps down and they were not get deep at the end of the trip. Troll them and try pumping the rod, it helps triger strikes. This will get you walleyes.
