Sad day in history. Mercury pulled the plug on carb & EFI motors today. RIP EFI engines.

Mercury did not wait until 2006. Faxes went out to the dealers today. Production is stopping on the EFI & carb engines. From now own it looks like 4 stroke, Opti or Verado if you like black.

Might be a "good" "bean counter" decision... But, the customers may go elsewhere for cost reasons. Casual/recreational boaters may just not like the "cost". They could find the same HP for thousands less in a Johnson...

On the other hand, they have a captive Lund and Crestliner market... so...

Lastly, might bring the Opti down in cost... who knows... Only time will tell... I'm just glad I'm not in the boat business right now.

The pendelum continues to swing.

Too bad, because the EFI WAS the workhorse of the Mercury line, and nothing else on the market has ever had that deep throated growl that the EFI did. Kind of like the Harley Davidson of outboards.

I have been running EFI's for the last 5 years, and everytime I started it up I thought of the Mercury motto, "Can you hear the water call"!!

Oh well, I'll just have to settle for one of the other 2 best motors on the market today, the Opti, or Verado!

I think it was a good move. They beat the crowd and the federal ruling by one year. Greg, I really doubt that they will loose any maojor consumer business during the one year period before everyone must be in compliance. I'd be curious to know what percentage of sales the EFI held. I'd guess it continued to dwindle as 2006 approached. That was my scenerio and reasoning for switching from my beloved EFI to an Opti a year ago. I just felt and witnessed that it was becoming harder and harder for me to sell a boat with an EFI on the back. This year, I sold the boat with the Opti in just one day(if bank approval doesn't hold it up).

Jack, although I loved the sound of the EFI, I actually like the sound of the Opti better. IMHO, it has more of the "Harley sound". And I was really amazed with the gas savings of the OPti this season. I saved $100's by making the switch in the first year. Good thing with the gas prices going up I'm sure that Jack will agree that the number one cost for guiding is gas and this year the skyrocketing prices put a damper on everyones profits.

Dennis, If you liked the sound of the EFI just wait you'll like the sound of the Verado even BETTER!! hint, hint.. To me the Opti sounds like a Honda Accord on steroids! Thank god we are finally getting outboards to use similar tech to the auto industry it has taken too long!
Good Luck

We ran the 250 Opti Max racing engine on the new Tuffy Osprey Pro 2060 this week, and it was AWESOME! I've had one for 2 years on my Patriot 2050, and really love that motor. I'll miss the price of the two strokes, but not the fuel economy or oil smoke.

Dennis,

I agree completely with your point about fuel costs. I rationalized staying with the EFI by considering the solid performance record and lack of down time versus the time factor for any repairs that might have been needed with an Opti. In other words, fuel cost -V- lost guide trips due to service issues. Those were focused entirely on the lack of speedy service in my neck of the woods, and NOT on product concerns. More of a "What if" scenario.

The announcement to the dealers and public was earlier than anticipated.
