Location: Appleton, WI | Is it a numbers thing, quality of fish thing (big fish), or both that has so many people headed there each fall? |

Location: Waukesha Wisconsin | I head up for the big fish. An 8 pounder is just another fish. A 9 pound fish is nice. A true ten is always what we are after. We generally catch a few 11's and 12's each fall. We have not broken into the teenagers yet. That has been my goal for a few years now.
With good weather, finding a spot away from the crowds, and learning the system, it can be a numbers game too. As an example, last year in one night our boat caught over 30 fish with 5 over ten pounds. Most fish were over 8 pounds.
Plan it right, do your homework, and with a little luck it can be just as good as Erie.
I may also add that those who do not like to travel as far have options for big fish closer to home too. I pulled a 12.52 pounder out of the Fox River the opening day of deer season. That fish made the cover of the Wisconsin section of Midwest Outdoors and I display it proudly on my wall.
For the record, it's the only walleye that I have mounted although I have caught several in the 12 pound class. It had sentimental value with a great story.

Location: Freedom, WI | Dennis pretty well covered it, but for me it has become an addiction. If I could only fish for one month of the year it would be at Little Bay in November. You can catch numbers of eater sized fish with the odd big one for excitement or you can target big fish. We do both, but they require fishing differently depending on which you want. Daytime deep structure gets mostly numbers of eaters, open water gets a few trophies. Nighttime most guys fish shallow structure or weeds for big fish. But if you get away from the boat parade you can do very well in other areas as well. |

Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | Fishing or hunting in places far away has always held the same charm for me, as I'm sure it did for the first explorers that opened this land. That great (kid like) expectation and felling of leaving familiar surroundings and taking in the sights and smells of new territory. Challenging it's unique unfamiliar circumstances for what could be a special bounty. It's those same things and feelings I seek on long road trips, that I see in peoples faces and feel in their enthusiasm when they come here to Saginaw Bay from far away or other States to charter me for the day or two. With enough trophy fish close to home, with a lot less time, money and effort put forth to catch them. If we all admitted it, those far away trophy fish are only a small part and an added bonus of what we really seek and enjoy about leaving home for a few days.   |

I love wally, but musky is my main pursuit. I can catch wally 10 minutes from my house, but a few of my buds want to got up there.
8-10# would be very nice(wally, 8-10# muskys are just a slap in the face, LOL) I feel weird about traveling for wally. LOL

| Give it a try one time. That's what I told my buddy last year before his first time. In less than an hour, we had a 26.5, 28, and 30.5". He's going back for his second year, and I 'm sure you will too.
This year may be an off year for us. We always go the weekend before deer hunting, which is the "new moon" this year. In our experience, full moon is best. You guys notice a big difference in moon phases?

I like the new moon better than the full moon in fall. Especially in lbdn during clear sky conditions. Speaking purely night fishing with these remarks. |

| I've done full moon and 1st quarter phase. this year we will be diong the new moon phase. I'm hoping for a better day time bite. The year we did 1st quarter phase we had a great day bite on the water, although it was during a small craft advisory.
This will be our 5th year in row up there, so I'm still studying the moon phase. I think it can help. But I believe weather and winds can play a much more important role in where and how you fish.
Like Dennis I'm still trying to crack the 13# mark, weather it be me or just on my boat. I sincerely believe we had one hooked up 2-3 years ago. I'd like another chance at that fish. |

| Well that gives me some encouragement, Dennis. With only one trip a year it's a bit hard to gage. We are actually going to try out of Oconto for the first evening, and then head up to Esky the next day. We're hoping to maybe hit some perch during the daylight hours. |

| I'm new going up there and i was wondering if you guys think a 18ft lund is big enought to fish this time of year at lil bay or big bay? also i dont have a clue to go for trophy walleye so alittle help would be appreciated on loc/lures or those harnesses. Are live worms better than artificial? thanks |

| 18 foot is plenty big enough to fish up here. Of course just like anyplace else on the great lakes, a little common sense goes a long way. I fish out of a 16 foot tiller quite comfortably.
Live crawlers work fine right up till ice up. With the water cooling, the perch and gobies aren't as much of a problem. No reel need for the fake ones. As the water cools, jigging or Lindy Rigging with redtail chubs also works well. There's mile of structure to fish, but the majority of people fish the north end of the bay. Like I tell everyone, if you can get on fish south of Gladstone, you'll give yourself much more elbow room. Most people seem to think LBDN is the section of bay north of Gladstone, and forget about the rest.

A guy keeps one, count it one fish for the walleye after fishing for them for over 50 years and he is called a meat hog. You gotta luv it.
Few preach and practice CPR as much as I do. It's laughable to be even responding to this kind of a post. I'm heading up to lbdn in a few hours and if things go as planned, my boat will catch over 100 fish that measure 23" and better. Every one of these fish will swim away after a quick visit and possible photo. If we are lucky we will bring home one limit per person of 16"-20" fish. And I'm called a meat hog for this? Bring it on! |

Go get a life. Why come here and look for a fight. Ever here of sellective harvest? That's something that your parents should have considered. Extremist like you send out mixed messages to the masses. YOU DO NOT have to throw back every fish you catch to practice ethical sportsmanship or CPR. Having a few fish for the table is very acceptable. Don't like it, go the PETA site where you belong. |

If I caught a walleye that size, I would probably release it and get a replica but that is MY choice. The last thing I would ever do is look down my nose at someone else that choose to keep it. |

Location: Northern Ky 30 miles South Of Cincy | We drive 700 miles from Ky everyyear the first thing we do the first morning is stop at Linwood Corners Resturant in Linwood Mi and eat a big breakfast then we go gown the street to Franks Outdoors then we know vacation has started and go fish LBDN we stay in Kipling at Lindbergs take up 2 cabins some years 3.
we go when the fishing is suppose to be bad 1st 2 weeks of Aug but always seem to put Walleye on the table always have a ball and really enjoy the people who live in the area. THe fokes at Bayview bait shop have always been wonderful and tell it like it is. The food at the area resturants especially Delomas (I think thats spelled correctly)is great and scenery is spectular. Our Favorite last night thing is to cruise to the lighthouse and sit and watch the lights of Escanaba while we fish the reef. We have been going to the UP since I was 4 now 64 spent many of my younger summers at my Aunts Cabin on Chief Lake near Republic. Its a rituial a passing of time I know my time gets shorter each year but my 6 kids love it more than me and they and their familys will continue to make the trek long after I'm gone like we do now. I taught them the love of the outdoors and a respect for nature. I couldnt ask for a better legacy or better place to earn it

Imagine being lucky enough (as I am) to be able to eat at Linwood Corners any morning I want and have Larry Gorske and the gang at Franks be some of my best friends. Thank you for reminding me of a couple of local blessings I take for granted most times. Like to also say I was very shocked and pleased with the friendliness of the people and with the true beauty of Kentucky/Tennessee around the Cumberland boarder areas, when we fished down there for stripers a few years back.
