Member Posts: 2300 Location: Berlin | Here is a couple charts (I hope they show up) from last year during the MWC and the second chart is from the last 7 days. Not looking like it iis going to be much fun this year. I know how fast the river can drop but I am wondering what effect this high water will have even if the river comes down to normal?? Member Posts: 1195 Location: Orland Park, IL | Yep, me and boy have been using the terlet a bit more this season. We got pounded with rain down south, kanakaee area. A good 4 inches a few weeks back. Its been monkied up since then with all the snow and runoff. Plus the snow hasnt even melted yet. Thats more pain coming. Always thought a good winter with snow was better for the river than not. The good old fashioned flush for the pullin hooks crowd. The IWT event on the 16th should be a decent gage, though 2 weeks before the MWC.

Member Posts: 2680 Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | Rich. I cannot vouch for how this type thing effects the walleyes on the Illinois River, but have seen our little Tittabawassee go from 970 CFPS to 6,000 CFPS (flooding the launching ramp to the top) in just 2 days. If it was fall it may push some of them back oout of the system on the Tittabawasssee. But if those fish are there to spawn, they will find shelter from it all and get back to both migration and the spawning ordeal at hand quickly and in the usual fasion. I remember placing very high in a local Tittabawassee River tourney we had during one of these flooded parking lot events. I found a million walleyes staging and keeping out of the torrent on a sheltered corner right on a flooded gravel road that was usually 15 feet above the river when it was in it's banks. One walleye after the other using a 1/2 ounce Pink/White Whistler Jig tiped with a shiner and all by myself to boot. It was heaven. Edited by walleye express 2/10/2008 9:57 AM

Member Posts: 2300 Location: Berlin | As far as rivers I usually fish, high water is much better then low water. The problem with the Illinois is all the feilds adjacent to the river. I was amazed at how dirty it was last year and the dirty water was EVERYWHERE. It was so dirty, I would be surprised if a fish could even breath in it. There is plenty of snow yet and the run-off will be a killer. I am just hoping for a early spring to get this melted before the tournament. The numbers are way down as far as entries for obvious reasons. I think if the water levels drop there might be some that jump in later but it is not looking good right now. I think a lot of people are gun shy after last year, me included.

Member Posts: 1188 Location: Chicago IL. | Rich. We have a bunch of snow on the ground yet. More comming this week. North of the city is still hammered. Unless something starts melting here soon, it will be a major flood (already had one this year that topped out 1 ft under record). It has been up most of the winter already. My feeling is it will go out of depue "IF" they have it.

Member Posts: 2300 Location: Berlin | John, Do you think with how fast she can drop that there would be a possibility of below flood stage levels if we had a big thaw in the next few weeks?

Member Posts: 1188 Location: Chicago IL. | With no thaw it usally drops a foot a day or so. But with no thaw in sight as of now and more snow falling as we speak, the kankakee river flooding and the desplains high, for it to be down in a month,it is going to have to start real soon, like in a week and melt fast. Sorry but I dont see it happening. If we could get a slow thaw it might be ok, but the weather here has been cold and warm/rain with no in between. I think the next week or so will tell.

Member Posts: 82 | It is looking pretty rough, ice is still heavy on the river and the Fox is totally iced up. This creates damns and restricts water even more. The problem is that the river is swelled already, and we didnt get our late Feb. early March rains. With the ground frozen still, and snow on the ground.....YIKES! Put it this way, usually at this time of the year my wife can't stand me pacing like a caged cat and organizing my tackle for the 5th time this month....chomping at the bit to get on the river. This year, the stuff is still where I left it in Nov. and will probably stay there till bass fishing starts up....Bring on the sun and sandels.

Member Posts: 1188 Location: Chicago IL. | It is not looking good with the extended forecast. The thaw is not going to happen soon. Sauger2, it looks like the thaw is going to hit at a bad time with the frozen/snow covered ground. Bass fishing,,,,,hummm,,, mabey
