Oh crap.... Cabelas is a retail clothing store compared to Sportsmans.  This is the one store in our area that will actually order something for you and have it in 3 days.  They have done a great job adjusting their inventory to match the needs of local sportsman, something that Cabelas would never do.  The Gander stores have become a joke when it comes to replacing inventory.  I have been there 3 times in the last 2 weeks looking for common items and they are always out of inventory, it's been the same story for the last 5 years in Appleton.

If Scheels would have hired the boy, I would concur. But, I won't recommend Scheels for anything anymore. Nor will I buy anything there anymore. Sour grapes maybe, but that's life. If I need something bad enough, I'll find it online, If Tew's or the Sportsman don't have it.

I like Cabela's. Great outdoor clothing store in Richfield. Best return policy in retail. I'm not sure if I've ever bought any actual terminal tackle there. They don't quite have what we need on the shelves. Some Crankbaits on sale, but overall, I go there for the deli upstairs.

Just because Cabela's may be buying the Sportsman Warehouse chain, doesn't mean they will become little Cabela's. I think they'll let them run the way they have been running. I'd be more concerned that they'd close them completely.

Personal vendetta?

Applying for a job and being rejected....that's life. but here nor there. I like Scheels, I like that it's close to my house and they have cool stuff and will order what I need. And I don't have to go to the Sportsman in Appleton!

I just checked and Cabela's has Slug-O's AND giant bobbers, so I don't know what crap the rest of you are buying, but they seem to carry both walleye items that I need.

Not a personal vendetta at all. I just choose not to patronize or recommend that store anymore. Pretty much the same as you with the Sportsman, Jayman. You had an unpleasant experience. At least I'm not bashing them. Entry level position for a kid looking for his first part time job. Bring him in for two interviews, and then say they are going to call him. Instead, he gets a letter. What else could they possibly be looking for? He's clean cut, courtious, and smart. Then again, maybe he's over qualified.

Denny, you're safe. He's way too smart to ever work in the marine industry! See, over qualified again! hehehe

Shep, I left the bash out this time. Perhaps next time?

Sorry to hear your boy didn't get the job, but again that's all part of life and growing up. Hope he found something he likes.

We all have had problems at one sports store or another now haven't we? Do we frequent them less? Maybe....but we still go there because they are the only place for us to shop. Thank god I don't have as many choices as the wife but I'm always looking for more, I find it hard to pass a small bait shop in a strange town and NOT stop and take a look....does this make me a compulsive shopper? God I hope not. If the kid behind the counter is clueless it won't stop me from going there because my choices are limited. Scheels is one of my favorites, where else can you walk in and grab a gun and shoulder it anytime you want...that darn Benelli Black Eagle feels so comfortable now I know I have to buy it! Shep, the second interview involves a long application did your son take that? It includes personality skills test with math questions, sales questions etc., then multiple store manager interviews, My son said it wasn't too bad.....maybe he can throw in a good word for your boy? Either way I'll continue to shop them all because the internet doesn't give me the ability to sneek out with the boys!

Good Luck

Tyee, yup, he did that second day thing. Had to get off school to be there in the afternoon. The last guy he talked to said he had the job, and they would be calling in a few days for orientation. Then a week later he got the letter.

Jayman, I understand it's all part of the deal when looking for a job. But, what are these places looking for? When I see some of these kids places hire, with the long hair, holes in their faces, and bad ink all over, it makes me wonder why he's having such a hard time finding a job.

Sorry to have this thread go askew with this. But people were stating why they went to certain stores, and why they didn't.

Tyee, Shep knows why I don't go to the Sportsman...I'll keep it civil here and won't discuss why. That and I think Rob Peterson is a nice guy and frequents here.

Jayman,
Please PM me and let me know how I can change your mind about The Sportsman. We have never deliberately tried to cheese anyone.

1st: Are we talking green bay sportsmans warehouse chain store or the sportsman single store down in the valley?
Green Bay Sportsman's Warehouse was NOT sold to anyone. The way I hear it, they are having ANOTHER record year at that location. Partly, due to the great input from us local anglers suggesting what to carry and their reaction to those requests. Heck, they even have AXEL's stuff in there! tee-hee...
As far as Cabela's or Gander for that matter buying anyone.....have you not seen their stock prices lately??? They couldn't put a down payment on a free meal right now. Lowest price in history for those two. Stock crash would be a better phrase.Check it out if ya don't believe me.
I'd guess somebody is trying to whip it up on forums and steal a customer or two from them.
Too sad people don't do their homework first.
Best customer service, price & selection gets my $$$$$$$$$$.

Tyee.

I feel your pain about not being able to pass up any shops, because I am a compulsive buyer. I was passing Franks the other day and knew I didn't have time to stop in, so I took a $20.00 bill out of my wallet and threw it out the window as I passed.

The sportsmans here just closed abrupty yesterday for some reason. Open less than a year. Hmmmmmmmmm

Sad part is that the workers only had a few days notice.

Some people that read these posts dedicated 60 hours a week trying to make sure they had what you needed, expand assortments and worked very hard to bring you top level pros for seminars.

Why would you say that it's something Cabela's would never do? Have you sat down and talked with the store manager? Have you ever sent an e-mail to Cabela's corporate headquarters?

I work part-time at a Cabela's store in Hammond, IN and take great pride in the fact that we have catered our selection to meet the needs of local anglers. We have Great Lakes anglers, Bass guys, Musky fisherman, Crappie anglers, I could go on and on.

I'm not saying that it's perfect, and maybe our stock prices are down, but who's aren't? They didn't get to be "The World's Foremost Outfitter" by not listening to the wants and needs of their customers. Not trying to pi$$ anyone off, Sportsman's is a GREAT store, as is Scheel's, just my $.02.

"The World's Foremost Outfitter" is a self proclaimed title. They don't hold a light to Bass Pro Shops and they are not as accomidating as the Sportsmans

I have had great luck in all these stores mentioned. None of them have everything I need and I don't expect them to. I use all of them for various things and I like to spread my money around to different places as well. The only advice I would give to all these stores if they want to really hit the big time is:

1) Put one of each of these stores in Berlin Wisconsin
2) Have a full row dedicated to Drop-n-Stay's

I am no prophet but it is hard for anyone to argue with those two ideas!
