Location: Rhinelander | Ten Pros headed out on the river this morning into almost perfect morning conditions. Clouds and cool temps will, according to Tom Keenan, perhaps help his bite strengthen. Winds look to be NE today, and moderate, with a slight chance of storms. Highs are supposed to hit mid 70's. The field of Pros was somewhat subdued this morning, for varied reasons including the new gear they are running added to the ever present concern about sand bars and navigation on the river. Most were making a 50 mile plus run this morning, so fuel is also a concern with the added Lindner Media passenger and gear. Ross Grothe felt the fish would really go. So did Tom Keenan and Tommy Skarlis, who provided a signature morning 'fire 'em up' interview for WalleyeFIRST this morning. Attachments ---------------- ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

What is the point exactly to putting these guys in boats they are unfamiliar with? Anyone know? Is it anything other than marketing for the FLW???

Location: Rhinelander | Nope, it's pure promotional effort. That is partially the POINT of the FLW, one might say, and there's not a thing about it the Pros don't know going in.

Member Posts: 1991 | Steve How do they get the boat set up for the final 2 days? Do they come with electronics? I would suspect some guys are using Humminbird and some Lowrance stuff? Do they bring their stuff with? Trolling motors cable drive vs electric steer? Rod holders? Stuff like that? The final 2 days are like the IROC races that I think NASCAR had, all drivers ran identical cars.

Member Posts: 591 Location: in the boat off the east shore somewhere | as long as they fill the tank for ya in those rigs every morning who cares........ im thinking most of the top ten will be able to figure out those fancy gadgets and strange looking contraptions.... if not i would think there would be some kind of owners manual in the glove box.... im sure they will have time to read threw the course of the day... lol i know cell phone use is not permited unless of an emergency but i would think if a guy wants to call the service and troubleshooting 24 hour hot line at RANger cust assistance to figure out how to turn the livewell on or something ... that would be ok too... Todd Frank's been in a Lund for some time and Brett King is in a Tuffy. Ted Takasaki was in a Ranger prior to signing with Lund this year. So almost all of them are very familiar with those boats. Member Posts: 3899 | The boats will be rigged with FLW sponsored equipment. Ranger, or G3 boats, with Evinrude or Yamaha motors. Minn Kota Bow mounts, and Lowrance Electronics and VHF radios. Not sure what rodholders are used. I don't know if they come with Land O Lakes butter on the sammiches for lunch, Banana Boat sunscreen, or Tylenol for the one that got away! Some of the guys recently switched from Lowrance to H'Birds. They are at the disadvantage as far as entering waypoints, trails, routes. They would have to do it manually. Unless they have Lakemaster software to convert from one format to the other. Could be a big deal as far as navigating around the sand bars on those long runs. Thos e with lowrance units are definately having an easier time with trails, routes, and waypoint transfer. Edited by Shep 9/26/2008 1:25 PM

Location: Rhinelander | the rigs are loaded up with Lowrance's finest, new Minn Kota motors, and Evinrude or Yamaha power. All are turn-key ready to rock, and support personnel are onsite and ready to assist anyone who needs help.

Is it not the intention to put everyone in identical rigs to level the playing field? Marketing aside, this was initially supposed to put the 10 best guys side by side with identical equipment for competative reasons was it not? Is it "legal" to bring a GPS "chip" to the new rig? Make it real interesting and give them all "new" never before seen hardware ie. rods and reels and a preloaded tackle box filled before the year starts and you have a nice twist!

Member Posts: 1382 | The championship boats on days 2 and 3 have nothing to do with leveling the playing field, it is all about what appears on TV. I can only assume they can load any data they wish into the units.

Member Posts: 617 Location: Oshkosh, Wisconsin | Shep hit the nail on the head - the biggest issue will certainly be navigation if the angler is not used to the GPS on the new rig. I'm not sure what technique most guys are using, but if I had to jig or troll precise contour without my Minn Kota Autopilot, it would add a lot of stress to my day. Speaking of techniques, what are most guys doing to put fish in the boat?

Member Posts: 859 Location: Appleton wi | Looks like a awsome time i can only imagine what it must be like for those top10 guys and what the season was like for each one of them to get to this point! Its a brilliant marketing idea for the manufactures to rig up those boats. I sure appreciate the fact that walleyfirst has great coverage for us couch fisherman. keep up the great coverage like you have all year!
