Location: mille lacs, mn. | I just took my brand spankin' new 2060T for a 44 mile break-in run on Mille Lacs.
In the past 29 years, I've been lucky enough to have run several dozen new, pretty darn good boats with several different brand stickers on them. To say the least...today I was impressed!

Location: mille lacs, mn. | The Jeep is a newer one. It's an '89. This is my 9th one since 1973. It's totally mint. Never gets to see daylight in the winter.
Interesting you bring up the match/wood thing on the boat and Jeep. I have a classic car guy looking into that now. The big issue is what if anything will hold up to the water. The back half of the main red sides would be the wood grain...... |

ratings are interesting, and everyone always wants more for a tiller.
since the USCG formula only applies to boats of less than 20' length, how did Tuffy decide the capacity rating for the 2060?
also, will Tuffy ever consider viewing the power-assist tiller steering as "remote" steering in order to get higher ratings on their tiller models? there are other boat companies who are doing so, and it's a very appealing option.

installing the power-assist steering is not the same as considering it "remote" steering under the USCG guidelines. from what i've been told, Tuffy still considers power-assist tiller steering as "non-remote" and uses the lower rating formula, thus limiting max horsepower.
some manufacturers look at it differently than others, thus i'm wondering if Tuffy has given any more consideration to increasing the tiller ratings when paired with power-assist steering.
for example, considering power-assist steering as "remote" is what allows Warrior to run their 1890 BackTroller with a motor as large as 140hp. according to the "non-remote" formula, this hull with a tiller motor would only rate to 85hp max.
this interpretation of the guidelines would allow an X-190 tiller to run a 150hp or even 175hp (manufacturers can still under-limit it below the formula); or to run a 1760 tiller with a 90hp or a 115hp.

Location: Rhinelander | Tuffy will not 'rewrite' the USCG horsepower ratings requirements. Tuffy doesn't have the luxury of 'deciding' if the tiller HP ratings are flexible using the Mertens system. It's legally not up to the boat builder, and a lawsuit based on an overpowered boat would be a test of the 'interpretation' Fiberdome won't take a chance on. When and IF the USCG rewrites the tiller horsepower rules and the NMMA accepts those changes, Tuffy will act accordingly.
As to the 20' question, Tuffy rated the 2060 T at 150 HP because the hull was tested to that HP under NMMA requirements. The boat should handle much more HP just fine. |

| so are the boat manufacturers, say tuffy,waiting for the coast gaurd to approach them and tell them it's ok to put a 115hp or even a 150 with mertens on a 1760t,x190t or 1890t, and probably sky rocket their tiller boat sales, or are the manufacturers approaching the coast gaurd to make this change?obviously the steering system is proven and the tiller market is growing quickly so i would think that in a time of lean sales getting such a change approved would be a huge marketing tool.i would think the cost of pursuing this change would certainly be worth the reward to tiller boat manufacturers. |
