Member Posts: 874 Location: Neenah, WI | I've been getting some calls on the tourney for this year. I've applied for a permit for July 30. Entry will be $80 per team with a voluntary $10 for the big fish pot. If you're in the Fleet Farm event this will fit in with your prefishing plans. I really won't get the ball rolling on this until I get back from Spring Valley. The tourney is held out of Paynes Point bar and the launch site is the Winnebago County boat landing. Thanks, Dale Frank

Member Posts: 874 Location: Neenah, WI | Winnebago County landing is located about 1/2 mile south of County GG on County A, turn left at the sign. The weigh in site is Paynes Point Bar which is at the corner of County A and Paynes Point Rd. Thanks for your interest.

Dale, if there is anything I can do to help out, let me know. My schedule is wide open that time of year seeing how gas will be over $4.00 by then :() By the way, you should have seen the piggy I pulled out of the river today, it even got me going.

Member Posts: 874 Location: Neenah, WI | G-Man, Due to the late date and probable warm water temps, catch and release makes it iffy. This is a small tourney with around 30 boats and I don't believe the harvest makes much of an impact. Also, Winnebago County boat landing is quite a zoo at 2:00 on a Sat. Parking generally is nonexistant at that time of day and we would be quite unpopular with the general public if we tied up the whole landing. We hold the weigh-in at the bar where we can take our time and get it right and not have to rush through it. I would be willing to listen to any participants with feasible ideas on holding fish in their livewells after the weigh-in for release. The issues I'm most concerned about would be keeping them healthy enough for release and the possibility of too many fish in a boat resulting in being over the bag limit unless we work with the DNR. Kendall Kamke will be quite busy with the soawn right now but I'll talk to him before too long and get his ideas. Rich, if you decide not to fish I would be glad to have you help a little for the weigh-in. Thanks.

Member Posts: 14 | It sure was a shame last year when we had to transport our fish to the tavern, have the fish sit in the hot livewells and then puke out the contents of their stomachs while waiting a quite lengthy amount if time to weigh the fish. If you remember Dale, the contents (weight) of the puke would, would made the second place team the first place team. This year: weighing in should be done at the launch and it should be live release. After seeing many 4, 5, and even 6 lb fish die in bags on the tavern porch, I think live release is a good idea. Member Posts: 2445 Location: Fremont, Wisconsin | I will jump in and back Dales comments about a live release and the mess that would take place at the launch should a weigh in try to take place there. The limit of fish per team is???? killing these few fish should not weigh on the minds of anyone. There will be 100 times more fish killed that day by the non tournament fisherman alone. It is ok to kill and eat walleye. They are good.

Member Posts: 14 | Why would weighing fish at the launch be a mess? Last year, there wasn't a soul at the launch besides Dale sitting on the back of his truck waiting for people to come in. There is plenty of room to weigh fish there. I agree, Walleyes are tasty, but anything over a 5 lbs is usually not. Edited by UnsungChip 4/8/2005 1:10 PM

Member Posts: 2445 Location: Fremont, Wisconsin | I was not at the weigh in last year but I have been at the cty. A boat launch somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,000 times. I ask that you check the facts as I have never seen this launch, at 2pm on a saturday afternoon, VOID of people. EVER!!! Mike at Paynes point has a nice place and the food is good, and the drinks cold, and it is much easier for a weigh master to do his job when he is not harrassed or hurried by anyone. Doing the weigh in at the bar is the RIGHT thing to do all around. I am sure there is not a fish going to waste from the tournament. Its ok, there are alot of 'eyes in the lake. Just dont over do it and get greedy!!

Member Posts: 14 | Stacker, Don't care about the cold beer, or friendly atomosphere. I enjoy a good time as much as the next guy. Too bad you weren't at the weigh-in, nor in the tournament, so I guess you shouldn't give your opinion on what should be done be done based on what happened last year. Have a good one.

I fished last year's tournament and yes it was a good time. Waiting around for 45 minutes if not more at Payne's Point with a bag full of walleye to be weighed in 90 degree weather was not. Some of the fish were 4 pounds plus. With that being said the boat launch is big enough in size to have a weigh in and if I remember it was not crowded what so ever. If your not going to have a live release tournament at least have the weigh in at the launch to let the individuals who want to release the fish do so at the launch. It is done in many bar tournaments every weekend and with 10 times more traffic than the one we launch at that weekend. Trust me if the weigh in is at the launch people will still come to the bar after and spend money. I hope that this does not have anything to do with not having the weigh in at the launch, if so it's sad. Just my opinion..

Member Posts: 14 | boards, Well put. Another local bar tournament the I fish weighed the fish at the launch, and I was able to release three 4 lb fish immediately after weighing them. It really feels good doing so. If you wanted to keep your fish, then that was just fine. But you were given the option.

Member Posts: 859 Location: Appleton wi | Unsung......its a bar tourny not the world championship! There are a fifty bar tourny's every year on this system from march to sept. If you wanna fish a higher visibilty tourny that has a more proffesional (image) then do so.But the rules in dale's tourny were posted prior to the tourny. If your concern is the fish then bring some ice and cool your fish during the wait to weight-in.For what it is worth I do not want to keep 3-5 lbers myself and eat and I like to release them also.

Member Posts: 14 | I agree. The rules were posted before the tournament, and it stated that the fish would be weighed AT THE BOAT LANDING not at the tavern. That was/is my only problem with the tournament.

I agree every effort should be made to allow participants the option to release their fish. The thought that someone would believe killing 20-40 large females is acceptable, is crazy. There are many of us who do more professional tournaments that enjoy doing the smaller tournaments with girlfriends/wives, and would like the option to release the fish out of respect for our local fishery. It was a shame last year to see so many quality females die in the sun. I was there and many people did the best they could to keep those beautiful girls out of the heat and try to keep them from dying but it just didn't work. As far as the boat landing being full, all of the participants who launched at the landing would already have a place to park being that their rig was there since 6 am that morning. It sure felt nice to release the 2-25" and 1-26" that I caught in a bar tournament yesterday. I am sorry to say but last year after weigh in the fiance and I decided we would not fish this tourny again because of the no live release, when we saw earlier this year that it might be live release we were happy to hear it and were going to sign up again. We'll have to wait and see --- Dale I'm sure you will make the right call.
