I got back late last night from my Saskatchewan deer hunt. Quite the drive......I'll never do that again!! I managed to take a decent 10 pointer that scores in the 140's. Not quite the beast I was hoping for but a nice buck anyway. The hunt could have been better but the weather was fairly mild with temps in the 30's and no snow. When I left Monday morning we had 2 deer out of 6. Heard my fishing partner and good friend Pat Schuette took an 11 pter yesterday.

On another note, I did manage to drive 766 miles in 10 hours Monday until I hit the blizzard in North Dakota. NASCAR here I come!!!

Nice buck Jerry! I got a typical Manitowoc County 8 pointer. 145 lbs.

Ladies and Geltlemen, before I get labeled as a grandstander, I would like to apologize to Jerry for posting my caribou pic. I did not mean to try and steal your thunder on a very successful Canadian whitetail hunt. Again, congrats on your nice buck! By the way Jerry, if you are looking for a taxidermist, let me know. I know one that has a pretty reasonable turnaround and reasonably priced.

Hi Jerry nice buck,

The next time your coming through ND Im sure Backer, Randash and myself would love to have you buy us dinner. Or heck we might even buy. Dont ya love that ND weather? It keeps the riff raff out. Lastly, as for miles only 700? Just to remind ya, last yr fgo-Cumberland 1166 miles, fgo-Bull Shoals 917 miles, fgo-Bay City 961 miles. Hope all is well.

Hi Aaron,

I thought of getting out my directory and giving some calls but with the poor weather and having driven for 10 hours I decided the hotel bar would suffice. The beer was cold and the Colts-Steelers game was on and given I've been working 13 hr days all fall this was the first time I've had the chance to watch an NFL game. I stayed overnight Monday in Jamestown, ND. Total driving to Carrot River, SK and back was 2725 miles. That's enough for this cat for awhile. I hear ya about the travel for last year. At least we're not Bobby Crow having to travel from Patterson, Washington to each event!!!

I left Jamestown yesterday at 10:30 when I-94 opened and hit some great travel conditions between Valley City,ND and Alexandria, MN. After that is was pretty smooth except for a bit of freezing rain in Wausau.

I haven't talked to Pat or viewed any pictures of his buck but I will post them when I get them.

Jerry,

Carrot River! Wow thats way north. Matter in fact we fished very close to that a month ago. I cant say where as I dont want anyone else to catch all the 10-15# eyes. Wait, many may see this post......there are no giant walleyes in Northern Sask.

Good buck and good photo, too, Jerry.
I am surprised it was only 760 miles driving for you.
It is just about that from here, too. But we kinda get used to 700 mile drives out here (montana and the rest of the west).

ooops... ok... now I see. You made it 766 miles............. to Jamestown.
That makes sense.
You still had many a mile ahead of you. (Is why I never get to Erie...)
Again... good buck.

Well, shoot!
First I thought you said you couldn't post the picture because it was over the 200 LB limit (instead of kb) Of course, I thought that was pretty funny....a neat way to brag about how big the deer was and all.

Then the mileage misread.

I dunno...Jer.

Nice deer Jerry!

"but the weather was fairly mild with temps in the 30's and no snow...."

Ah, Jerry, that'd be a heat wave for up where you were this time of year. My Canadian friends tell me about hunting all the time in -20. Big deer and <big fish> up there, despite what AA says...LOL You must have drove through Minot, yes? Stop in next time! JC

JC,

Yes it was very mild. Two weeks before us a group of four had 3 chances at book bucks and messed up one way or another. They had 6-9" of snow and air temps around 0-20 degrees. The week before we showed up it was mild with temperatures up to 50 and the snow melted. I was just happy to see one decent animal and make a good shot at it. After I left due to work committments the air temp was 0-10 above and the bucks started to move better but nothing bigger than 140-145" was seen or shot.

Yes shink, Pat will be mounting it for me. He does a great job as a taxidermist and I highly recommend him to anyone here.

We hunted in the Red Earth Indian Reservation. Our outfitters were Namiteek Outfitters. If anyone is looking to take a trip like this email me and I'll give you as many pointers as I can. This was my second Saskatchewan deer hunt and I highly recommend it to anyone who is considering it.
