Just got back from fishing the Genoa area for a few days. 40-50 fish days are the norm. Dragging ringworms and 3-way rigging with Dave's KABOOM shiners up river worked for us. We caught more and bigger fish using the KABOOM shiners trolling up river than we did while jigging down river. 22-25' of water worked best for us.

I sure wish people would learn to stay out of those deep sauger holes. Most of those little fish they are catching end up floating down river later because of the air bladder issue.

Shallow sand flats were also working very early in the morning for those willing to be on the water before the sun came up.

Also observed some doing well anchoring and working ringworms in front of wing dams. We would have tried this if there wasn't a long line of boats waiting to get in there. We chose to stay out of the way for others. Too many spots and not enough time.

Dennis,

Give me a call when you're comming up to our neck of the woods again. I'd be glad to relay any info I may have on the bite, or maybe even hook up for a day on the water (my boat or yours).

Thanks,

Marshall Wuensch

A big group of us are going up this weekend for our annual hutch`s weekend. Sounds like it is going to be fun. Going up to handline and jig some of my areas downriver. Daves shinners have always done well for me there. I will never understand why people want to fish that deeper water to kill fish. If your going to go to meat hunt, than keep them. The eagles can only eat so much.

HAHAHA Man the pressure you guys are putting on me. Hutch is makeing me a new secret pattern. It will be known to only the select few there. Did some work with markers on the IL and it was deadly when the crank bite was on. Cleotus knows what it is but is sworn to keep it quiet. So guys bring a 3 way rod, trust me.

Yea too bad the crank bite died this fall. But all our upgraded fish came on it if you waited them out.

Was up by Hutch last weekend. Got a look at your ~KILLER~ lure as well as the
29 new additions to his crankbait color combinations. If that lure doesn`t kick
butt on the Illinois I don`t know what will. Once the word gets out Hutch will be buried in crank orders. I guarantee you there will be more than a few disappointed
guys come MWC time that waited to get their orders in. He was hoping to do some
testing last weekend but he didn`t have the clear coating finished so we had to settle for catching our fish the old fashioned way. I even had a couple of 3-way rods in the truck.

The river came up and got grassy, so cranks were out. Setteled on jigging and had fun with some saugers. No pics. Looks like a cold snap is comming so it will be tough with the ramps.

Hey John- you have to loose that mindset about jigging. Just think of it as vertical
stolling ot trolling. After all the boats moving.

trolling - lazy mans fishing,to be good you must be able to jig.

I disagree, as long as there are tourneys on the Great Lakes, trolling will be a staple of fishing. and ya better get good at it also, to be "Good".

Anyone who says trolling is lazy has no clue how to do it right. Especially on rivers. We're busier and more active while trolling the river than if we were trolling.

I will second what Dennis said. I grew up fishing the Mississippi and trolling it can be as much or more work than jigging. I will never quit trolling as it's often the most effective way to cover water and entice those big river eyes into smacking your bait.

On the Miss, I cast Willow Cats at wing dams when I don't have the ambition to troll. It's still a lot of work, but turning on the trolling motor or anchoring just doesn't seem to be as much work as running a kicker, putting out boards, selecting baits, setting rods, clearing lines, watching the GPS and sonar, yelling at your partner (optional) and all the other "Lazy" stuff that goes with trolling.

Master???? Thats funny. It was easy with the right baits. Also, trolling a river
( leadcore, poleineing, handlineing, 3 ways, longlineing) is a ton of work if you want to do it right.
