Ladies and Gentleman, this board is where you come to post your stories and share your feelings about the final moments with one of your beloved boards.

Stories about lost "Yellow Soldiers" or "Family Members" if you will...we all need to vent, mourn losses, and support each other in these moments of sadness and loss.

Thank you in advance for your time and sharing your feelings about your boards, and may the man upstairs bless all of the Offshore boards which silently perform their one task, the task they are born to perform.

I have been lucky, I haven't lost a board yet. I have had them wander off... But, fortunately, I got to them before a "stranger danger" incident...

But, I do live with the fear...

What about board abuse? I witnessed some board abuse last year at a tournament. I saw this poor board thrown against the windscreen/console of a boat. Like it was the board's fault this guy couldn't catch a big fish. All the fish the boards had on that day were on the small side. When the abuse continued, both verbal and physical, I wanted to say something, to shout out to the abuser to stop. In the end, we just watched as the other boat trolled out of sight. Like eveyone else, I just didn't want to get involved. It has haunted me all year. I got counselling, and finally this year, before the abuse started, I said something to the guy from last year. Right away, I yelled, "No throwing the boards against the console!" I think I startled myself, not to mention the abuser, at my new found courage to speak out.

Shep,

I also have witnessed the abuse you speak of however the name of the guilty party has slipped my mind.

I did however loose a board to my own neglagence and I havent been able to forgive myself since. I was trolling Green Bay in a strong "Nor-easter", trolling south with the waves when my yellow friend and the bait he was so gratiously tugging behind him were both sent in a backword motion by a "snot rocket"(Muskie or Northern). While pulling the rod out of the rod holder the line somehow got caught up in my watch, I still to this day have no idea how, and the line broke sending my yellow buddy into the fire to fight alone, vulnerable like a man tossed overboard in the berring sea. The waves were rather large and to make a long story short I lost a good man that day, after an hour of searching he was gone, dragged to the unknown depths of Green Bay. To this day he has not been found but if I know an Offshore like I think I do then he is still wrestling that fish with everything he has, or he has been picked up and is now doing his job for another fine angler. I still miss him, he was a quiet one, never said a thing but I know he loved his work. I just hope he forgives me for the mistake I made on that fatefull day. I hope all is well for you "Left" wherever you may be.

I am a firm believer in returning any lost little yellow pets. I know the pain and suffering that can be caused by loosing such a valued family member. I urge you all to tatoo your little yellow compadres with such tools as a sharpie.

I will however admit, that I once resued a little guy at a league event that I could not return to his original home. I found out where he came from, and let's just say that he'd be sitting in storage somewhere waiting for years for his "owner" to have any "free" time to use him. There are times when you just can't return someone to such an abusive household.

I've adopted this little guy as one of my own. I hope you don't look down on me for this, but I just couldn't subject the little guy to the abuse that I knew was going on behind closed doors (or in public in this case). I hope that this little guy lives the life he deserves with me and all the new partners he has found.

You guys are all sick!

They’re only boards, gull dang it!

If I loose one so what? They’re only boards, gull dang it!

If I beat one to death, so what? They’re only boards, gull dang it!

If I store it in a dark, cramped area, so what? They’re only boards, gull dang it!

I always scour the lake I’m on looking for wayward boards. You guys think you give them a good home yet they seem to appear around my boat with that “take me, take me” look on their face. I pick ‘em up, throw them into my dark cramped storage unit and I never hear a word out of them.

Board abuse? Come on guys, they’re only boards, gull dang it!

What’s next, kissing your worms good bye?

I still have not gotten over my loss. It haunts my dreams. I am so distraught I thought I found my lost soldier but as I got closer, it was just a guy in a yellow sweatshirt wearing a red baseball cap. The search continues.

I was out on Poygan last year trolling when I noticed something yellow floating in the water... I use Church boards that are orange so I was not quite sure what it was (sic..) I scooped it up and still could not tell what it would be used for... with all its clips and such dangling off and the cute little flag and springs made me think it was a kids toy... for surely no manly man fisherman would need a device to tell him when a fish was on... as I continued along my path, I spotted a gent in a 620 Ranger longingly gazing off the front while he shouted directions to keep on the lookout ... it was then and only then that I put 2 and 2 together and discovered it was a board used for trolling by the guys in EXPENSIVE BOATS and me being the commoner driving a lowly Skeeter just did not understand the complexity of the device. I hesitated to wave them over knowing that they would probably think I had broken down in my lesser boat, but I held the Yellow device high in the air and waved it with it's little flag and springs all excited that it would be going home..... Sorry I could not help to take a shot. I always get a kick when someone fishes with me and asked me "how do you tell when a fish is on?" I usually point and say... "That middle board has a fish... reel it in" Purple Skeeter

i was out late afternoon yesterday.. i was alone.. this was the first time i used my little yellow soldiers .since last year.. when i opened the hatch they were screaming from the blinding son.. i reached in and all were thinking i was just grabbing another bag of jiggs or something.. after clipping on the first and sending it on its way the others were shaking like a pup that just peed on the floor. i could only run 3 lines as i was alone.. after about 45 min. and after each one had caught me a nice fish i looked at the other 3 in the box.. thanks to this thread they got there chance .. i changed up and ran the other 3 for another hour or so.. im not sure if it was the little boards or me but there was a little rust to get off. half have tin front clip mounts and i do favor them a bit to the black plastic mounts.. from now on i will try to use all when possible ..QUESTION... ??? can i run 6 boards when im alone if i only put hooks on 3 ? so they all get to play? or is it unfair to the ones without a hook at the end as they are just ghost runners? just trying to keep them all happy,

Dennis,

It is obvious to me that you, my "former friend" (as a result of this previously unknown bahavior flaw) are too cold and calloused to be my (warm and fuzzy board loving) friend... How can you not be emotionally touched by the honorable little "ducks" as they march in lock step across the waves... As it were "soldiering on" to effect our plan of outwitting toothy critters laying in wait for us below the surface of the water... Ever vigilant little yellow soldiers asking for nothing more than a ride on the water's surface as their reward for their stewardship of our lines, lures and harnesses.

Dang Boards, indeed! I consign you to the ranks of YellowBird users, persons of low breeding and even lower morals... Next, we'll read that you have gone to "Big Boards and a mast" (kind of an ego thing for less well endowed fishermen as a replacement for... well I don't want to get too graphic on a family forum)... LOL

Fellow Fisher Warriors

I have been through all the battles of the FISH WARS each you speak.

Our boards are like King Leonidas of SPARTA and his brave 300 SPARTAN Elite that held off the thousands of PERSIAN while the rest of GREEK city states got their armies together.

I hope each of you fishing warriors have seen 300 and can relate to how it is like fishing.

We are few fighting against the many [the multitude of fish in our waters]!

Never retreat, Never Surrender, that is SPARTAN fishing law, and by SPARTAN fishing law, we will stand and fish.....and DIE!

This is a new age, a new age of FISHING, and all the world will know that we few SPARTAN Planar Board Warriors stood to defend it!

My lame website is at: http://home.new.rr.com/wiweisse.

Tight lines and keep the laughs up. -Drew

It looks like my little soldiers are going into battle this weekend! the Macks lure 100 is full and looks like i may have to throw them out to the wolves .... i will be painting war paint on there little cheeks.. though some are scarred from previous battles, i know they are ready.. some old sturgeon bayvetrins have seen plenty of 8 or 9 maybe even a ten lb toothy critter, but this year on bago we have some nice fish and i need one or two of my rookies to step up as the fish are a bit larger as of late. part of me is afraid for them .. yet the other side of me cant wait to see them struggle to stay out to the side with a big fish trying to drag it down. im going in with 6 little yellow worriors , and i pray we all come home.. they were telling stories last night and some of the old vets were talking about great white sea birds and sturgion over 100 lbs. they told stories of big pike surfacing for taste... and the responsibuility to run free of floating debre... you should have seen the two rookies all bright yelow perk up... they have the spirit and they have tasted blood in the water before... IN my next life i want to come back as a yellow soldier... i can only dream to serve one of you above walleye fisherman.. it would be an honor. i know i may have to pay my dues as a yellow bird first but in time , a shiny yellow offshore is my dream .. springs and all.. someday ...

4 of my guys are off to see Doctor Phil! They had a nervous breakdown this weekend, they were the new guys you know the well rounded type, and contrary to their cousins of the yellow skin, they did not do very well this weekend. I kept hearing the little squeeks out of them all weekend "gimesomeat, gimesomeat".

Their plastic partners couldn't do it! The balsm tag teams on the other hand loaded up on Whities!!! I think I will join them for their first session as I never thought about needing to bring along the "meat" That blow pushd their prey to the bottom and they wern't moving for me. My hat goes off to the little soldiers and their owners that know when to adapt to the changing weather patterns, I knew it might be tough but what the hell I'm a seasoned fisherman and last thing I thought I would need would be crawlers. Boy was I off base!

Good luck
Tyee

Talk about needing support, you should see what a 8 year old driver can do to a fleet of these little yellow guys. have you ever seen the inside board jump over the front boards tow line and pass it. I won't even mention what happened on the other side of the boat.

Caution!! The lowest of the low is amongst our fishing fraternity. I found a yellow sentry bobbing off of Murdock just east of Oshkosh. I noticed during the rescue process that it was properly tattooed and anticipated a huge sigh of relief from the parent. Much to my surprise, he didn't even know his hard working loyal sentry was missing. Talk about a product of a dysfunctional family. Right is right so it will be returned but I feel it would be treated with much more love and respect if I were to adopt it and integrate into my existing family of proud, loyal and highly regarded yellow sentries.

I am a member of the Board of Direction. Our function is to make sure they go 'right', or 'left'. Sometimes, when the go 'left', they leave entirely and end up showing up in France; or begin a long taxing action that is quite stressful. When they go 'right', they go right, and that's a good thing we think....until they end up with a red band around the area of the Board only describable as a 'neck'.

We designed a concept Board that went neither 'left' or 'right'. It voted for Ross Poirot. We immediately discontinued that idea.
