Hey Gang,
I am coming up for my annual vacation to the in-laws starting Friday for a week. They live down in Beaver Dam.....and I was hoping to get up to Winnebago for a day or 2. Got up there for one day last year and thanks to some help from this board, my father in law and I had a pretty fun day on the lake(except for his seasickness). We at least got into some walleyes. Last year we got them pulling Tots off of the East shore.....around Brotherstown. I was wondering if anyone has any recent information they could share. Rest assured that this Iowa boy only would get to use this info for 1 maybe 2 days at the most and anything you could share(might really help me to look like I am knowing what I am doing with the father in law). Just looking for someone that can tell me if its worth the drive up. The idea of going up to Green Bay also has been talked about...but never been there. Does anyone have any thoughts to share on either place?
Thanks in advance for any info.

Make the drive to green bay. As far as I know winnebago is tough right now. The water was really dirty on Sunday and fishing has been slow. Good luck

It all depends on what you're looking for. There are still fish to be caught on Winnebago. The only thing right now is the crank bite has been hit and miss. Harnesses are still doing OK on certain parts of the lake. It seems that the fish have developed a new fickelness lately. We had two different color combos that would work and nothing else. We did manage a 3 man limit in about 3-1/2 hours though.

We fished the east side about 1-1/2 to 2 miles out east north east of Oshkosh. We trolled at 1-1.2mph and tried to run the harnesses about 14' down over 19-20' of water. We trolled north then ran back down to troll north again.

Green bay will offer bigger fish but probably not as many. If you're hoping for a wall hanger, the bay is the way to go. If you want numbers and eaters, Bago is where I'd go.

Good Luck.

East side has been hit or miss, as said. We have been running cranks in the mud, CD7 Walleye Divers in black/gold and purple with some luck. Most of the fish we see have been around brothertown using harnesses and trolling along side of reefs in 14 feet of water. I must say though this has been an early or late bite with favorable southwest winds. anything else and its kinda dicey.

We have seen the pesky smallmouths really slammin baits. Slip bobbers with a hook and leech are best, but a casted deep divin crank works just as well.

A few perch here and there, though we really havent targeted them. I hear they are going on mendota, with is usually the time I start lookin in bago. mud/rock transition the best. Bob (vikings) rig works best, ie, a small hook/jig with piece of worm a few inches off the bottom. If its flat, the bite seems to die.

If you're gonna fish 'Bago I'd recommend fishing perch, it seems most of the perch fishermen are still picking up a few walleyes here and there. Work rock and the rock/mud transition that Komo mentions. Jigs and slip bobbers are the way to go. I've heard red worms have been doing better for perch than regular crawlers

I hate to call Bullshit, but I have a hard time believeing GNWC's report is anything recent, based on what I saw at the SWC event and what I heard for the WWA event that took both took place this last sunday (7/15).

Good luck.

Jayman,

You must be one of those guys who honestly believes that those fish aren't biting anywhere in the 40,000+ acres besides one or two reefs. I never said I caught fish everywhere. We just ran into a good school and stayed on them.

It's not that hard to do; you mostly just have to be lucky enough to find the first few. I have never posted BS, and would not intentionally lead someone to believe that fish were biting if they were in fact not. Perhaps I run a little different system than most, perhaps I was lucky. That doesn't change the fact that you have no right to call me a liar.

Why don't you ask some of the other people on this board how many times I've sent them false info. Now I know why guys like PS and AXL could get sick of offering up anything on here. It seems when a person makes a post they’re either a jerk for letting somebody in on the big secret, or they’re a liar.

Luck has something to do with it, whether your ego will allow you to believe it or not. I’ll gladly admit that we were lucky to find the fish that we did. Say what you want, but at the end of the day, I can look in the mirror and be thankful that I don’t have to cut another man down to feel better about myself and not being able to catch fish that day.

Good Luck to everybody this weekend.

Guys.....I really appreciate the help! I was hoping to get something going on Bago just because its closer...but I am not opposed to going up to the Bay. However....having never been there....can anyone recommend where to put in, where to try, bait shop to talk to, etc.... Anything you can give me will help me immensely.
Again thanks for all of the info....i may spend one day on Bago and try my luck for one day on the Bay.

P.S. I really love this board for reading whats going on up North....even when I Know that I will only get up here once a year.

Again....THANKS!

One of the best replies I have read in a long time Marshall A person comes to this board and asks for help so you try to help him and you have to put up with a personal attack from a third person. Now back to the original question I fished both the Bay and Winnebago twice in the last two weeks, Brian this is what I did on the lake. I like to launch just south of Oshkosh on the west side so I can go anywhere on the lake or up the river if I need to but the last two times I trolled the mud with crawlers with pink or purple beads and big silver and the next time gold blades. Except for the harnesses I don’t think I had a pattern as I would catch a fish high and the next would come off the bottom. Both times on the bay I went out of Oconto including the week that the W.W.A. was in town, I went east of the launch to what I call the shipping channel. The best program was again crawlers in the same colors, also green got hot one afternoon all of the fish were up high, I wish I could be more specific on depth and places but the fish were scattered like Marshall said. Have fun wherever you go and be safe.Paul

I stand corrected....Marshall is a fishing GAWD when it comes to 'Bago.

SWC 26 teams fished. 11 teams weighed fish, 3 limits weighed. Many of the zero's were people out trolling the mud. Marshall tags a 3 man limit in 3-1/2 hrs. Them are some impressive stats.

I've made my point, I'm done with this one.

Jason,

Do I need to drive the 2-1/2 hours on Saturday to prove to you that I can catch fish on Bago right now? I said directly in my post that I was lucky to find a decent pod of fish. I may not be in SWC but I'm also not a first time Walleye fishermen. I know that not being in your club completely discredits me from knowing anything about anything, but I'm willing to put up or shut up.

I had 150 some posts and just now randomly decided to start filling people with BS. You got me; I actually posted an ice fishing report from 1982 when I was 2 years old. Geeze, grow up, I was lucky for one day. Don't worry; your little rant has guaranteed that I'll never post any reports again.

It's funny that somebody right below me just had similar results. Maybe, just maybe 2 of the 200 boats on Bago daily can do well on any given day. Maybe when I learn something about Walleye Fishing I'll try to be a great ambassador for the sport and show my true decency just like some people seem to find appropriate.

I will continue to send PMs to the contacts I've made here over the years about reports, but will not again post info only to take an unsolicited attack by someone I've never even met.

I think the only point you've made is that you don't like it when anyone disagrees with you. Besides this thread there was the thread about Lowrance Electronics regarding a possible decline in quality and your back and forth posts with Stacker.

I don't know anyone involved here but the one thing I've observed is don't disagree with Jayman.

Now some POSSIBLE explanations for Marshall's success versus the success of the fishing juggernaut that is the SWC(the same amount of sarcasm used by Jayman is implied here too), for anyone who wants to open their mind.

Marshall was not fishing a tournament, maybe his three man limit were "eater" fish as opposed to tournament fish.

Maybe Marshall's fishing partners had a little more "local" knowledge of the bite. Why would he drive all the way across the state to fish Bago, the beautiful crystal clear water?

I don't know. I don't care. I will be fishing Friday through Monday out of Pipe no matter what the bite is like. My point is be open-minded people, after all it is just fishing. All fish stories have some truth or some false to them.

I think we should have a match. Jayman vs Rookie. Launch at Winnebago County landing, just south of Payne's Point Bar. 6:30 AM-2:00PM. I'll buy the winner and the loser a beer and a Hamburger.

Sunday?

Here's how we determine the winner. When Jayman comes back with no fish, well then he was right. If Rookie comes back with a limit, then he was right. Take the difference in fish, and who ever is further off from his goal is the loser.

For instance, if Jayman actually catches two fish, and rookie would catch 4, then Rookie wins. If Rookie catches none, and Jayman catches 4, then Jayman wins.

My prediction is a tie. Jayman catches none, and Rookie catches 5. They'd both be right, and we can stop this silly arguing.

I buy beers and burgers for both! hehehe

Who wants to be the observers?

Guys,

I just want to apologize for overreacting to this. It just burns me up that 2 or 3 people have to fight with everbody. I truely think this could be the best fishing site on the web if we could ask questions instead of making blatant accusations.

Our limit consisted of 15 walleyes between 14" and 20". 3 were between 14-15. A good chunk of them were between 15&17. Never once did I say I had 15 24" fish. I consider legal fish on that system to be 14" as that is what most tournaments use as a legal length.

I am in no way trying to slam anybodys club or fishing abilities. I found fish, there was luck involved. End of story.

Let's talk fishing. Shep, I'll take you up on that beer, but only if you come fish Petenwell with me. Let me know.

I'd pay to see Jayman and his sunny personality get their tail kicked. A few other "regulars" should get an invite as well. Lot's of wolves that like to blow, blow, blow....

I'll come fish the Pete. I really need to learn that water better. I get on fish, and then when it counts I catch whiteys! Or muskies! hehehe

The MIL lives near Adams, so I get up there several times a year. I don't always bring the boat, so sometimes I need to get away from the wife and her! I let you know when I'll be over that way. Probably sometime in mid August.

Bob, I'm gonna have to respectfully disagree with your post

GNWC, My apologies too, I didn't mean to blow this up into a big deal. Only questioning your results after what I knew was a VERY tough bite on Bago this last weekend. I'll leave it at that. I think you and I have an understanding of that now. Peace.

Shep.....Shep.......Shep, hehehe you made one mistake, you assumed I didn't catch anything this last weekend. But I'll still take that burger and that beer. Sunday morning is no good for me. But it would sure be fun.

Anonymous, welcome to my fan club, first thing you need to do is atleast sign your name. I ain't got nothing to hide...why should you? no matter, I probably know who you are anyways.

And prolly won't be the last. I think a beer stop is in order one of these nights.

The boy plays a double header tonight in Greenville. They sell beer at the concession. $8 for a sixer. and it's cold beer! 1st game starts at 5:30. I think he's pitching the first game.

And I ain't shaving this stache! Just like Honeycutt in MASH!

Just for the record,

I did not start this thread with a secret location report... I've been working the last 2 weeks and have not been on the water!

Oh, wait, there was that day I took my kids out tubing, but no fishing was attempted.

So if the bite is tough for a tourney guy fishing 8-5 what in the world makes a person think that the bite is bad for everyone. Many guys are back in bed by 8am with a limit....Jayman it happens everyday! Second and third in on of the tourneys you speak of spent the day on the reefs and I believe they caught way more than their limit of fish? just the wrong size, My brothers motherinlaws sisters 3rd born was fish the docks and did very well all weekend, even the guys in the waders caught limits and continue to do so every night after 5 and they are some dandys by the way! Did the mud bite slow down for most....deffinately between 8-5 but try the early early bite and you might be surprised!

Good Luck

It was tough last weekend no doubt. We still managed a limit in the WWA but never had to work harder for it. Still I bet out of the 300 boats on the water on Sunday a few of them had fantastic days. Lets put this thread behind us and have a big get together where we can have multiple group hugs going on and talk about our feelings like men. I will start: "I love you guys"
