lake-link says one cooler may be in the hands of the dnr. another in the hands of the FDL police. anyone have any contacts at either organization? i'd love to see an official response from one or both on this or any other site. how about an official response from tfm promotions?? Mr. Jim Coon......you out there??? I'd think they'd have a vested interest in dispelling this, if it is truly a rumor. gosh....i hope so!

Maybe they were supposed to be fastened to the bottom of the lake or under water and the waves/weather broke them free. GPS cooridantes to the cooler won't do you any good if the cooler floats to the other side of the lake, ha!

Guys this is no joke about the coolers with walleyes in them. TFM Promotions know all about it, call them. FDL police know about it as they picked up Sundays cooler (the one in the picture). Like I posted on LL, everyone so far has swept this under the rug all week. Somebody has had to seen that cooler in a truck, boat or somewhere. This really should not be to hard to figure out who did this, it's not an every day coleman cooler!

Location: Rhinelander | I'm betting that IF this was an attempt to cheat, the culprits wouldn't run around with the coolers out in the public much. Either way, the authorities will deal with the issue.

Member Posts: 591 Location: in the boat off the east shore somewhere | yes the police and dnr will deal with this issue ,BUT!!!!!!!! im sure they could use a place to start. anyone who knows something should contact them. in my mind if this was an attempt to cheat in a walleye tournament. if it was intended for the merc national, than it is the same in my mind as a bank robery and attemt to steal 13,000 dollars or what ever the first place perse was. not to mention the 75 teams that did place would have been moved up in the money, thats 75 more accounts of theft and fraud i would think that would be enough to qualify this as a major fellony, its Crap!!!!!!!! if anyone knows who did this they need to contact the athorities and give them the tip. cheating needs to be addressed by the fisherman , the directors and the staff cant be everywhere at once and the more eyes and ears out there the better... can you imagin troy and keith getting beat out by the team that would have weighed these fish if there plan wasnt foiled by mother nature! do you think these coolers would have been found if they were anchored properly? we would have a team of cheats and crooks on the podium in stead! i make little jokes about this thing but sounds like its the real deal. somone needs to step up! somone should have seen something and i dont for the life of me know why the athorities or the staff didnt bring it up so that if somone did see these coolers in a boat prior to the tournament they would be made aware of the fact of what they were being used for.. the fact that nothing was braught up is what bothers me... there are 600 competitors in the merc, i didnt know of this until it was braught up on here yesterday(thursday 4 days later) all of the teams that have fished that tournament over the years. all the teams that have gotten close to winning but just couldnt do it... year after year they enter and fish for the sporsmanship and freindships and the dreams of winning just once and there are guys out there who would think nothing of taking that away by doing something like this... somone knows something, two people can only keep a secret if one is dead! somone needs to step up! there is an anonomous tip line you know. get the word out and somone may have seen something. swept under the rug? maybe not but the fisherman need to make sure that if these persons are found that they get what is comming to them... fortunatly they didnt get away with it , had they gotten away with it you would have had a major cash fraud , im nots sure what could happen to somone that didnt cash a check because the couldnt find there fish stash,,, but if the athorities know. Ban them from the merc forever,,, heck i would stand up at every rules meeting that they showed up for ,,,, merc otter street , mwc, uncle bucks Bar.. it wouldnt matter,, bad press from the tournament ,, ya you may have some but i would think it more important that this team or teams if thats the case... gets banned from everything! i dont care if its a golf scramble for charity , make sure there pencil doesnt have an eraser

Location: Rhinelander | Agreed, but...Gotta catch them first. That's the job of the authorities, and I'm sure anyone fishing the event would have already called in if they had a tip or two.

Member Posts: 591 Location: in the boat off the east shore somewhere | sworrel you are right... just a bit upset now.... and like many though now that i know of this as i look back i dont have any clue whos coolers these are i was hoping that if the field finds out about this maybe some leads would come in... just makes me angry,, otter street this weekend another 300+ boats are going out today and tommorrow.. then the mwc another 200 maybe... along with many smaller tournaments on the lake, drives me nuts to no end that there is a team or teams that my buddies are fishing against plotting these evil deeds.. odds are pretty good that the team who did this last weekend is agian on the water this weekend.. just upset i guess we will see how this plays out.. there were a lot of boats that caught some nice fish last weekend , and many more that had to walk up on stage with there tail between there legs with a few or no fish, to think somone is out there pulling this crap and the thaught of them on stage with a big smerk on there face and a check in there hand makes me sick! good luck to all in otter street ! looks like nice weather but a tuff bite again. hope you all find some cleaner water and the fish get hungry for a wile . they hafta eat sometime... go get em.

Member Posts: 499 Location: Appleton | The following statement is incorrect from another post (everyone so far has swept this under the rug all week) This is be investigated and we are doing what we were told by authorities. Here is the information I have at this time There was one cooler that had 5 dead fish in it. It was found Friday washed up on the east side. The fish had been dead for a few days when it was found. They stunk bad, really bad. Indication of the amount of time they were in the cooler. They were found Friday already dead and smelly. This indicates to me that these fish would not have been in any condition to go through the weigh-in at the Mercury National. Also remember there are non tournament anglers that violate regulations. We as tournament Directors and organizers do our best to keep all tournaments on a level and LEGAL basis. People that have been caught in the past are banned from future tournament participation. We do have lie detectors test in place and this is used every year at the Mercury National Edited by Jim Coon 6/14/2008 11:26 AM

Member Posts: 591 Location: in the boat off the east shore somewhere | wow! thanks jim that clears things up! (understatement) that cooler could have been a make shift livewell tied to somones dock or boat. anywhere upriver or in the lake.. sounds like this has been blown out of proportion and i am guilty of getting worked up myself. one cooler not two... fish dead for a week not alive. thanks JIM i guess that puts this to bed. i feal better now!

Ha i wish it was just a rumor...the fish that my friend found on sunday in the reunite cooler were not dead they were alive full of color gill plates moving! That cooler however was turned into the city of fond du lac police dept...anyone who doesnt not believe can call the dept and ask and get whatever info they will give you...if this wasnt a act of cheating someone went way out of there way to put a pair of hinges on a cooler drill holes in the side put a bungee cord around it and tie a anchor rope around it....sounds like a cheater to me....my guess the reason this info was kept and has been kept so quiet is to protect the integrity of walleye weekend which is understandable to a point however i do think and hope that this is looked into further....dont mean to start an uproar guys but i thought i needed to chirp in with what ive seen and know however iam aware that this type of stuff does happen more often than not....thanks

Let me start by saying I don't fish your tournaments but I am a property owner on the lake! When Sundays cooler floated in, I went to Lakeside park around 2:30 to report it to tournament officials on what was found. A cooler with 6 live walleyes, not dead and smelly as stated in a earlier report. At that time I was told one was found on Saturday (not sure about the one Jim mentioned from Friday), but they said they told that person to call the DNR Hotline. We were told to do the same. We didn't do that however however, we gave ours to the FDL police. No tounament officials and I MEAN NO BODY from the tournament every saw the cooler or fish, they didn't want anything to do with it. That's why we involved the police because we dind't feel satisfied by the answer officials gave us.

I guess I have to ask the question, why would the police care and why would they investigate anything? I didn't know that putting fish in a cooler was against the law. Don't get me wrong here, I fish tournaments and the idea that someone may have done this as a way to cheat makes me sick but there are alot of different possibilities that could explain the coolers. Alot of people on the Winnebago sytem have small fish pens that they put their catch in so that they can clean a weekend or even weeks worth of fish at one time instead of every day. Perhaps the cooler was simply a makeshift "holding pen" or in lake "livewell" that broke loose from a dock in rough weather. You can't just put fish on a stringer and leave them for a couple days because they will either die or turtles, birds or even crabs will get to them. A cooler tied to a dock would be a pretty slick and easy way to keep them alive and fresh until a guy had time to clean them. I guess I would rather hope no one was cheating, either way I don't see why the police would care, someone in the department probably took the fish home for dinner and threw out the cooler.

Member Posts: 591 Location: in the boat off the east shore somewhere | ok the plot thickens ... agian! this doesnt look good, we are back to two coolers. one at the fdpd, and one at the merc. one full of dead fish the other live and kicking.. i dont care if these coolers are tied to a dock up river or along shore.. if this is true you cant tell me there is no comunication between the fond du lac pd. and the merc staff... its fondys festival to police. jim was pretty up front with his statement , didnt sound like he knew of this second cooler.. or he is unable to comment , maybe there is an investigation and there close.. or maybe there is no way to prove what these are or whos they are so why try? either way our Guest sounds credible to me. after jim put the first cooler to rest i felt great , but now i have an uneasy fealing in my tummy again... there may be more to this guys.

Again I ask the question "what laws were broken by someone putting these fish in a cooler and what would the police care about it?" There is absolutely no evidence that this was an attempt to cheat in a tournament and that said there is no law against putting your days catch in a cooler and tying it up to a dock to clean another day. Why is everyone so insistent on blaming someone for trying to cheat?

Member Posts: 591 Location: in the boat off the east shore somewhere | ibfishing.... if your going to tie a cooler to a dock to hold your fish to clean later than fine! TIE it on TIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! . and why would anyone have two 6lb fish and a bunch more very large fish stuffed in that little cooler to clean later anyway? so one or two can roll over ,,, die and get thrown out because two days later you decide to clean them? if you dont have ten min.. to clean your fish when you get home then you have the problem.. this isnt a matter of law. its ethics... if you live on the water and can sneak out fishing at a moments notice i would think by now you would have no problem catching your dinner almost any day you want. on this system the way the population has exploded there is no reason a lakeside dock owner wouldnt have a freezer full already . if your going to tie your cooler to your dock so your grandkids can put a few perch in it or a few walleys till you can go and get a couple more later in the day or the next day to fill in a meal fine! put your name and address and phone on the cooler so when it breaks free and i hit a water filled cooler with my lower unit i know who,s living room window i need to throw it threw. anyone ( and folks have the right to ) but anyone who eats 6lb walleyes that havent been hooked bad and are unrealeasable are nuts anyway, take the young ones , how much mercury and lead and pcbs do you think is in a ten year old fish ? or throw them in your cooler on the dock, maybe on a tuff bite tournament day one of your buddies fishing glenroys bar and adult toys fishing tournament may just feel the need to swing past .... heck put out a tip jar you may do pretty well. oh and tell the guy down at Glenroys Bar and adult toys that i think this is the year i enter that 500.00/entry big buck contest.. oh and thanks for letting me use your chest freezer , that pope and young i drilled with the truck last december may just come in handy , aint it great to steal from you freinds!!!!!!!! tight coolers.. since the prize money is over $10K, its a felon. And if there is some felonious intent, then FLD police are required to investigate. Its probably nothing guys.

Bradley, I think you better go down to your local Wal Mart and buy some larger panties because the ones your wearing seem to have gotten a little tight and bundled up on ya. Like I said, I just don't understand why everyone is so quick to jump to the conclusion that someone must have been cheating. It may very well be that it was an attempt to cheat but then how do you explain the first cooler that had fish in it that were dead for at least a week? Anyone who has ever fished at night off their dock and either had a couple to many beers or had to get up early and didn't want to clean them that night, tied the stringer to the dock and come home the next day only to find them eaten by a turtle can understand why someone would put them in a cooler. Try something new, untie your mind from the dock if you can find it between your lawn mower and pink flamingo and entertain other possibilities.
