Perch continue to be the hot topic lately on Bago and it seems there are a lot of good sized fish out in front of Waverly Beach Bar and Grill along the North Shore. The key right now is to find those areas of sand to gravel transition areas and be right on that edge. They are prefering minnows over crawlers right now, and deadsticking seems to be the best presentation. 13-15 feet of water seems to be the hot area as well for perch here.

Little Blackbird Island is still going along for perch and most here are slip bobbering or deadsticking for them with either crawlers or small minnows. There has not been as many boats here this past week, but I think the tough winds and rain we have been having has kept a lot of boaters from venturing here.

The west shore reefs have slowed down for walleyes some, but there are still fish to be caught. The key is to move often and find an active school of fish that are feeding. Too many times I see guys sitting in the spot for hours. If there are no bites in half hour, MOVE to a new location.

Gehrkes Reef continues to do well for both perch and walleyes in the mid day. However there has been a lot of boats here and this reef is so tiny it really cannot be fished right if you are not where you nedd to be on the reef. If you can get on it though, I recommend trying here in the next week.

Garlic Island has been producing some nice fish close to dark with slip bobbers and crawlers. This area is really producing the best right now, so get out there for some quality sized fish.

Long Point is doing well for walleyes, however the size is ranging anywhere from 10-23 inches on a daily basis. We have had some days where all we get is 11 inchers, and we also had a couple over 20 inches. We have been using yellow or powder blue jigs tipped with minnows and vertically jigging here. We are drifting and not anchored. 1/4 oz jig seems to be plenty of jig and I even used 1/8 oz jig on a calm day this past week and it worked fine.

The area in and around Pipe is hit or miss for perch right now, but if you do get into them it seems that they are averaging around 9 inches or so. I did see a few giants this past week in this area, that were 12+ inches. They were not in my boat, but still good to see.

Trolling is slow all over, however I did get a report that the area near the mouth of the Fox River is producing some quality fish on harnesses. Purple and Red seemed to be the best colors here, and they were in 6-10 feet of water near the bouys out in front of the mouth a little ways. This next week I plan on trolling the north end of the lake in the 16 foot range with larger style crank baits. This is the time of the year where you need to use larger style cranks. The bait fish have had all summer to grow up, so put away those small baits and start pulling some larger ones now. I suggest trying to use #7 Flicker Shads, #7 Shad Raps, Little Deep Rippers, and Thundersticks. One of my favorite colors to use this time of year is the clown colored bait, however I personally think that sound and vibration are more important then color, that is why I like to use Flicker Shads a lot. They have a great rattling sound, that I feel really does attract the fish.

The Fox River in Oshkosh is doing well for walleyes and catfish. This is the time of year when the walleyes will go into their mock run and head up the river for the fall. We typically will vertical jig here and I like to use powder blue jigs tipped with minnows and a stinger hook, or we use ur bow mounts and go up river and pump flies. When pumping flies we always make sure that we have some tinsel in them as an attractant. We use three way rigs, and pencil style weights when doing this. I like purple or red colored flies.

There were a large school of whitebass in the Menasha channels this past week, and it was cool to see. I do not know how many were in the school, but it was massive. I was out on Thursday afternoon, and it appeared that they have moved to another area.

I hope this little bit helps and I will see you all soon with another report. This is Axl and I am OUT!

I was out Sunday morning and froze my butt off for one 15" eye and a few smallies. That NE wind usually makes it tough. I also forgot gloves so I let my rods sit in the holders too much and probably missed a few bites. I was suprised by the number of boats out; I didn't see anyone doing much and most didn't stay out too long.

Axl,
Once again, an incredible and detailed report. Thanks for sharing.
It has been held by many, that fishing ends on Bago by the end of July.
With hunting activities, the pressure is down and a good time to get out.
I have not been on Bago for months but your reports make it tempting.
Take care,
Jim O

bago up date wed... east shore... JUNK! water was clear!! i could see my jig in 6 feet of water... we fished rock piles from quinny south to almost pipe... not a nibble not a worm stolen nothing... stoped 5 times along the way and couldnt get a nibble from a perch... made a phone call to a heavy hitter accross the lake... nothing at all going on the west shore from the mouth south to the big island ... very little action in the river wed.. but lots of whitbass i guess.. i dont know .. even when the bite is tuff a few fish will take the end of your crawler off or you will catch some oddball stuff.. one thing is for sure, there is a fish party going on somwhere? with how clear the water is im tempted to get out the trolling gear and make a run threw the mud .. but no my buddys 620 got some sta-bil into the tank , i drained both lower units for him and pumped em both full of fresh gear lube... yesterday afternoon/ its going off to the boat detailing guy for a bath and a hot wax.... this sucks. he has for the most part given up.. other than a few fall trips up river maybe a run to de-pere or the cedar river ,, maybe the dells if the weather breaks in the winter months for a day or two... but his boat is in for the winter.. im set up pretty well so we will be fine in mine too.. its just that if i count the months til april we have a long winter if we put them away now... as you can see im having trouble with this... im in winter denial and he is sitting in his new custom built tree house... he is about 20 years ahead of me and is a very wise old buck... im just stubborn and im not ready to give up on Baggo... just looked grim yesterday.. now warm weather agian and rain.. AXL AWSUM report as usual! i guess if im goin out in the next few days id check a couple of my best spots and then try something completly different... heck i dont know ,,, i only had crawlers and usualy this time of year its nice to have some minnows along. there were a half dozen or so boats out in my neck of the woods most perch fisherman... all moving and shaking there heads ... how things can change .. just the first skunk ive had in the box all year... a bit worked up this gets me .... if anyone gets out in the mud or off the mouth in oshkosh with some cranks let me know what happend otherwise ill most likely try this weekend again and if that doesnt work ill be up river in a few weeks... good luck... thanks for the reports. Brad
