Member Posts: 3899 | Brett Favre has decided to retire. Sad day for not only Packer Fans, but football fans all over. I think it's a good time to call it, after having a great year last year. Could he have made it to the SuperBowl this year, if he returned? Maybe, if everyone stayed healthy, and the youngsters continued to improve, and they got a guard, and a safety, and a dime back, and a punter, and and and...... Thanks, Brett, for 16 years of heart pounding plays and excitement on Sundays. I'll miss listening for you to put the dagger in the opposing team on Sundays while on the water. Enjoy that John Deere!

Member Posts: 2445 Location: Fremont, Wisconsin | I agree, its a good time for him to step down and not go out screaming and kicking like alot of the old quarterbacks do. He did some great things on the field that made the games exciting. I wanted to ask, as HGMeyer said he was a class act, If you think he is, then, What do you think he did to make him a class act?

As someone viewing Favre's careeer from outside of the cult of 'green and gold', I would say he was a class act for 2 reasons, primarily: a) Favre gave it his all in every game. There's no denying he poured blod, sweat, and tears into each game b) For the most part he conducted himself well on and off the field. Yes, he was kind of a whiner to the refs -- but that's modern American sports; he certainly wasn't anywhere near the worst offender. Yes, he had some substance abuse issues -- again not uncommon in or outside of sports; he dealt with those demons without harming others or making a complete fool of himself. As a football fan (a Vikings fan to boot) I always enjoyed watching Favre play. While the hero worship in this area sometimes borders on the ridiculous, there's no doubt he deserves a lot of respect for his accomplishments.

Member Posts: 8 | It truly is a sad day, as Brett is the only Packers quarterback that I have ever known. His career was truly outstanding and his accomplishments will never be matched. More importantly, the way he played the game and the way he carried himself on and off the field is why he has become a Packers legend. It will never be the same without #4 behind center. He made the games so exciting to watch because one play he could make the most unbelievable throw and then on the very next down he would throw into triple coverage. If he actually stays retired, I feel privileged to have froze my *@# off to witness his last game in person. He was one of a kind and will be missed throughout all of Packer nation. What are your favorite Favre moments? There are many but a couple of mine are the monday night game against Oakland after his dad passed away and the game against Denver last year when he completed a bomb to Jennings on the first play of overtime to win the game

I'll give you a couple reasons I consider him a class act. I love a guy who comes to work and work hard every day. Who brings his lunch bucket and plays through pain. A guy who inspires those around him and makes the people around him better. A guy who has a sense of humor through it all and shows genuine enthusiasm when things go well for his team. I love to see a person get rewarded for hard work and good work ethic. I love a guy who admits his mistakes and mans up and overcomes them. I love to see a guy who could have any one of a swarm of women who follow the game around, but chooses to be faithful to the one he has loved from the beginning. And chooses to be loyal to her even when things go bad for her. I love a guy who is a family man and appreciates his father's advice and influence on his life. Who repects the wisdom of his elders. That is something that is RARE in professional sports today. Most of the pro players don't even know their own fathers, much less respect them. I love a guy who is the all time leader in interceptions, because it proves that he really wants to win so bad that he is willing to take the chance of being the bad guy in order to give his team a chance to win. Few people remember that Babe Ruth was also the all-time strikeout leader. I'm not a Packers fan, but it's hard not to be a Brett Favre fan no matter who you are. Enjoy your retirement Brett.

Member Posts: 63 | Yes he is one of the greatest quaterbacks ever but im pretty sure Peyton Manning will proably break all his records but then someday someone will break his numbers alone aren't how a player should be judged he was great because of his passion for the game and if he doesnt have the same passion anymore he should retire. Im not even a Packers fan i like the Colts but Favre deserves his props . SEE YA IN CANTON BRETT

Member Posts: 3899 | Records are made to be broken. Someday, #4's records will be owned by somebody else. If PM gets the TD record, he'll have to stay healthy. He's proven pretty durable, but he's also had a great receiver for his whole career, and he's been able to get the ball out to him quickly, so he doesn't take a lot of hits. Seems as though PM took a few more hits this year without Harrison, whined ALOT more, and didn't toss as many TD's as he has in the past. In order to set those records, you gotta play. So far PM has. But, any given play, or game, and he could go down. History says he will, but maybe he will be like Brett, and keep on playing. Time will tell. Was Brett the best of all time? IMO, yes. But I look at the whole package. 16 years of never missing a game. 16 years of thrills and spills. 16 years of always having a chance to win, no matter who surrounded him. 16 years of straight talk. and on, and on. The best, to you? Maybe not. But certainly in the top 3 or 5.

Member Posts: 617 Location: Oshkosh, Wisconsin | At PM's current pace, he would break the yardage and touchdown mark in 5 years. That's a long time in football years, but it is certainly within his reach. It will take a bit longer to hit the completions mark, but not much. I do think the media "love fest" with Favre is a bit much, but it is understandable with the various personal tragedies he and his family have had to endure. Favre was a great player. NO doubt about that. Certainly one of the top 5 in the modern game. I don't like trying to compare players from different era's because the game has changed too much for that. My only beef with the guy is his fans. Too many packer fans take the game WAY too seriously and get angry quickly with any discussion of good old #4's short comings. Most of us have a hot button - guess I'm just a bit surprised so many people have the same one... Only 6 months til the season opener!
