First off- I realize many of you guys are not SD residents, & don't fish here enough to answer my questions, BUT, you may have friends/family that fish here, or that you fish WITH here, so here goes:

For all you trolling professionals/gurus out there, questions for you?

Which do you prefer, for Missouri River walleye fishing in South Dakota?

LEADCORE?

OR

FIRELINE?

Here's my dilema.

I am wanting to purchase (2) additional trolling rods/reels (probably Diawa 47 reels/with counter, as I have heard great things about these), coupled with a nice trolling rod.

I currently own 2 Cabelas DeepthMaster ll's for trolling, 1 has leadcore on it, the other has 10# Mono on it.

I never fish anywhere other than the "Missouri River" here in SD, usually Chamberlain/Pierre/Mobridge areas. Always for "Walleye".

Which line would you prefer, Leadcore or Fireline/Mono?

Is leadcore used alot by walleye trollers here in South Dakota on the Missouri River system, or are the majority of walleye trollers using Mono/Fireline? I know the Mono/Fireline will easily reach 20ft. depths, & some have told me you really don't need to be walleye fishing any deeper than that, around here in SD, on the Missouri River.

New to trolling, I did research on the leadcore vs. fireline/mono, & am still unsure. Heard great things about leadcore, but not really sure if it's needed for what I'm doing, OR maybe it is?? Can you help me out please??? Thank you!

Any/All help-comments are greatly appreciated!

I hope I can help somewhat, even though I don't fish the Missouri. I spend as much time or more than most on the Mississippi and I see valid uses for both. My suggestion would be to buy one of each. Leadcore is very versatile, but there are times where long lining mono/fireline is the way to go. I especially like trolling leadcore in the early spring 34 degree water to about 45 degrees, and in the fall during the same conditions. You can also use the leadcore to get you down deep in the other months.

There are times during low flow on the Mississippi where the best fish come from 20' of water or more and leadcore is the only way to go. However, when the fish are in shallower water, longlining shines. Braided lines will allow cranks to dive a little deeper than mono in the same lb test due to their thinner diameter. I personally like trolling with 10lb xt because it's tough and has some stretch.

All it takes on the river to loose a crank on braided line is one little knick and then hook up on something and your crank is gone. I think much of this info should translate well to the Missouri.

Good Luck and I hope you enjoy your purchase.

I would rather have 2 of each than four of one. Leadcore will allow you to run cranks that wouldn't normally be able to attain a certain depth ie you can run a #5 shad rap in 15 FOW. It will also allow you to run cranks with much less line out that you would normally need. Run two lead-lines up off the front rod holders and 2 fireline rods off the rear holders, it keeps your lines spread out.
