My neighbor fishes a lot and his recomendation for line was berkley sensation. I bought some and tried spooling it on this evening. once I got it spooled there seemed like there was alot of twist in the line. i casted it out in the yard and after the cast a bunch of it came coiling off the spinning reel i am using. is it the line or the reel or me causing the issue. maybe i am spooling it up wrong. i just layed teh spool flat on the ground and held the line with a little tension as i spooled it up. Whats up??

Member Posts: 139 | Another couple of questions - Did You have the label on the spool of line UP when it was on the floor ( Berkley recomends this). Is it possible that You over-spooled (too much line on the spool)? Just a thought - Bob.

Mono on the other hand cause all sorts of problems almost immediately. The line pound test, the diametor of the reel spool as compared to the filler spool and the method used (Spinning or Level Wind) to wrapped the line on the spool all have a bearing on the twist. All line absorbs water and get more limp after doing so. If I'm only going to spool a short length of mono on my reel, say 120 yards or less. I soak the line in a container of warm water for about 20 minutes. Then run the entire length out in the yard. Then pinch the line tight between my fingers as I spool it on the spinning reel. When the line drys it seems to conform/memorize more to the reel. I've also started using beaded chain swivels up the line about 30 inches when trolling anything, or a good barrel swivel up the line when jigging. Nothing will ever prevent line twist on any brand of line. But there are ways to keep it to a minimum. Edited by walleye express 8/25/2008 10:21 AM

Berkley does not put there labels on any particular side of the spool, it's all random. I usually start by spooling with the spool up and then check for twists, if it is twisted then I flip the spool over to label side down and that takes care of the twist.

I have eliminated a lot of my problems with the purchase of a Berkly line spooling station. About $25.00, holds the reel and the spool so you get good tension when the line goes on. Prior to that, when I wasn't respooling 10-15 reels, some more than once a season, I would put a pencil through the spool and apply tension with my feet. Have always had the line come off the top of the spools and never many problems. 10

Member Posts: 885 | I used a method like Dan, throw the spool into a bowl with warm water that covers about 1/2 the spool. I use a pencil through the spool and run the line through my fingers to put tension on the line. It has worked well for me to wind the line off a level spool just like the factory put it on. Never had muck luck letting it coil off the spool and onto my reels. Use a drill with an old bit to remove the old line, this works well if you need to do more than a couple of reels. Member Posts: 2300 Location: Berlin | You can totally eliminate this problem by laying the sppol on the floor and matching the rotation of the reel to the rotation of the line off the spool. The line is put on the spool untwisted. When you lay the spool on the floor and pull line off it the line twists. It they are both rotating the same direction, your reel will untwist your line the bail turns. It works every time and I never have issues with any type of line.
