I'm building a new ecommerce site (non fishing related), and have always used Paypal for my sites. I have heard people say that they won't purchase from Paypal stores. Do you guys feel the same, or are you just as likely to pay via Paypal as you would be with a direct credit card payment.

The only reason I haven't gone to a straight up merchant account is due to the added cost, but if I feel that I can increase sales by going that route, I'd be game. How does everybody feel about Paypal sites versus regular credit card shopping carts?

I buy very little on-line so my opinion might not be very worthwile to you but I will give it anyway.

From what I understand PayPal is associated with Ebay and I will not use either due to there anti-hunting and anti-gun stance.

GNWC, i have been an avid paypal user for 6 years buyer/seller. I have not had good expierences with there customer support. recordings, on hold and later talking to a asian that cant understand your problem. For your benifit id look into google checkout. paypal is good. but look into other options..

I've used Paypal for some other sites for about 5 years as well, I just wonder how many folks out there just flat out don't want to use Paypal. I'm definately looking into other options, and may even provide both options but it get's pretty costly.

Thanks for the opinions.

We have only had one person that had problems ( and voiced them) with our Paypal Checkout out of hundreds of customers. We get the occasional check by mail with an occasional phone order the rest use Paypal.

For the most part, I am very happy with our Paypal service and have no desire to switch. I am also interested to get other peoples opinions here.

I've had great luck with people invoiceing me through paypal and paying the invoice by credit card. At the same time I believe my CCard was compromised by paypal/ebay when they had thier security problem. Can't say for certain since CC compnay would not give me details, but happened right after a paypal trasnaction. No big deal for me, new cards issued. And I would still use paypal after that. I prefer CC option just of that reason, you have the right to refuse transaction/payment if you get scammed.

Just my experiences.

I am glad to see the opinions on here. That's exactly what I was looking for. Paypal has worked well for me, but I feel like I miss a good part of the market becuase of the negative views many have about Paypal. A merchant account can cost up to thousands of dollars annually for a small business, and Paypal will be much less.

I have seen some merchant accounts out there that will allow both credit card an Paypal for a reasonable amount per month (but you still need additional sales to make up for the added cost).

I guess I have some thinking to do. Thanks for the insight.

I don't know what type of product you sell but have you considered giving discounts for payment other then credit cards and paypal? Perhaps wire transfers, cash ect. If most sales are fairly local people can pick it up and get a discount coupon for their next purchase if they pay cash.

I'm a big cash guy, i'll take my chances on a phoney 100 dollar bill rather then take a beating from credit card companies.

Just thinking out loud, maybe it won't work for your business.

I have no problem using Paypal on the net. Might be the most secure way to make a purchase on the net!

I leave payment options pretty open on my site. You can order Paypal, I can Paypal incoice you, so you don't need a PAypal account, or good ole check/money order. I'd say 75% of my payments come in the mail, but most people are also sending lures to be painted, so that's a little skewed. I did notice alot of the old timers don't like paying on the net , and they're a big chunk of the fishing biz, so I'd leave them with a comfortable option of paying by mail.

One more thing to add, I don't have a PayPal account and am not going to get one unless I am dragged kicking and screaming by my kids! I am just not the computer type to trust getting it. If you had something on your site that I wanted I would probably either not buy it from you or try to call you to put it on my credit card or arrange other payment.

I may not be the average internet shopper but if I were to have an internet business I would not want to alienate any potential customer.

I use PayPal (buying and selling on Ebay, and buying on other sites), never had a single problem, and when I look to buy something, I will always choose to use Paypal. I don't have a credit card, so if a site doesn't take Paypal, I won't buy from them if there are any other options. Adding other ways to pay is fine, but I would not replace Paypal with them.

PS- If you are trying to sell naked pictures of Jerry (or anyone else here), it really isn't going to matter....

i do not have a paypal account,,, i will not set one up , i have purchased a few items with a creditcard but 99 % of the items I purchase i send a postal money order or god forbid ( i just throw cash in the envelope) i havent had a bad experiance yet , after about 25 transactions.. im not buying things that sneaky people would expect to make a buck on. dealing with the correct sellers and good people make it all work.. but i dont spend much! never went over a couple hundread bucks.. I think if you offer check or money order option thats all people need in addition to paypal,, if there happy with the item and the deal it doesnt take anything to grab a money order and send it out, the only thing faster is a credit card for the i need it now crowd ,,

I also buy and sell on eBay. Paypal or your own merchant account is an option you must have if you sell. I've found that many people will not bid on your items if they can't use a credit card to pay. I also accept checks and money orders. For the most part buyers don't like to wait for shipping until a check clears or spending the extra buck for a money order. I have not had any problems with Paypal.

I would never use Paypal. I got all kinds of Phishing scams using Paypal logos when I had an account with them and poor service when I contacted them about it. It all ended when the account was cancelled.

That pretty much seals the deal for me. A good chunk will use it, but from the results I've seen so far, and the emails I've gotten about 40-50% of the folks who have responded either have not used Paypal or will not. I will keep it as a payment option and add a few others.

If this small sample translates to actual business, that would be 40-50% of sales being missed right away. I guess I'll be looking at merchant accounts, Paypal and accepting mailed money orders/cashiers checks (or personal checks once they clear). Thanks for the input.
