I'm not trying to start a fight, but am curious about practices of those fishing clubs who put out tree lines and plow roads on Bago. Last year, we had our permanent shacks out off the east shore for about 3 weeks before spearing started. We used this PUBLIC launch for weeks with no hassle.

Come Thursday and Friday of spearing there is a guy standing right next to the landing basically telling people they had to pay to use "their road and landing" that they maintained. He was actually insisting that we pay before we drove off. Needless to say after a couple words I drove off without paying as it was a free launch.

Now I realize that the road maintenence is very nice and that some of these fishing clubs will help pull you out of a snow drift or worse if you break down out there, but what is the position of some of these clubs? I'm curious if most EXPECT you to pay if you use their bridges, landings, etc. or what?

I don't want to be a jerk, but I also don't feel that I should feel obligated to pay for a public launch, especially if I don't use their plowed road.

There is no such thing as a public launch anymore. I can have 50 people at the park and use everything in there but as soon as I put my boat in its 5 bucks. I don't think we should have to pay anything. They spend allot more money cutting the lawns at these places then they do maintaining the boat ramps.

If it's a public launch/access you can drive on for free. I'm speaking of Calumet Cty. landing, Winn. Cty landing, etc. The Paynes Point Hook and Spear club OWN their landing and it'll cost you 15 bucks per year to go on there. Donations or memberships pay the bills for all of these clubs to provide roads and maintain equipment. Compare this to some other places like Mille lacs in Minnesota where it costs 10 bucks PER DAY to launch a boat from a for profit landing.

PP is a great deal. I also think that the Otter Street membership payment is quite fair because they have bridges and plow roads. Right now you can drive all over, but that is a lot tougher when we have more snow. It is definitely worth 10 or 15 bucks to be able to cross the crack on a bridge. Just ask the guys who have to pay to get extracted.

Someone charging at a public landing with no bridges and no need for a plowed road sounds a bit opportunistic to me.

I can see the payment to use the bridges....but a plowed road on the ice would be the same as a smowmobile trail, clubs maintain it for thier sport but anyone can use it without a fee.
