Some may differ on my perspective here but there is a distinct difference around the anus that is really only evident durring the time around the spawning period. I have never really looked that close personally at other times of the year. There are a ton of 20-24" females in the system as well as males and there is no way to tell in immature fish say under 17" 5-7 year olds, until you put the knife to 'em. It's easier to tell a female from a male now and I would not second guess anyone telling you that. just ask them if they are putting them back or how many they have in their freezer and congratulate them!
Good Luck

hahaha....I knew that would get a rise out of someone! Put 'em to the knife or let 'em go! The system I fish doesn't warrant me "looking" that close! The real question here is.....Do YOU feel guilty after cleaning them and finding all those eggs?
Good Luck

The blond hair and the strech marks. Always is a dead givaway for me. LOL Honestly, not really sure. Its pretty easy to see before and after the spawn but in mid summer, I cant tell.
