Member Posts: 1406 | Whats happening on the Wolf River? Great question! There are a LOT of people fishing and fish are scattered everywhere. Got a report from DNR at launch that some pre spawners were still being caught on Saturday in the New London area. All the boaters I talked to in Shiocton had a slow weekend but they were getting A fish or Two. There was less success the farther down I went. Current was swift and fast. Seems the weekend bite was a morning and evening bite as usual with all the people out. Great weekend for a ride though. Talked to a LOT of people and many had 1 or 2 but many had nothing. The Freemont area was much slower with a lot less current. That probably changed though by now. Still Tons of fish WAY up north. About half the fish shocked this year came from Shawano and the other half throughout the system. Gonna be a crap shoot this weekend and it might get real fun with above normal temperaturs expected for the next 10 days. Good Luck Tyee

Member Posts: 84 | In low water years when the spawning marshes do not have much or no water, the walleyes continue north up river to the Shawano Dam. Lots of fish have been ending up north of Leeman the last few years. The DNR was in this upper section of the Wolf with their shocking equipment tagging fish.

Member Posts: 1314 Location: Menasha, WI | This is posted on the WI DNR Outdoor Report and might provide some insight, "The tag return rate this spring is less than last year though - another indication of the poor bite this spring due to the large size of the fish in the run this year and the excellent condition of the fish this following the excellent foraging and fat building conditions the fish had in 2009. Some walleye were collected this spring to test liver and spleen for the VHS virus, and every fish, both males and females, was filled with layer upon layer of visceral fat, somewhat unusual for this time of year. Fat fish don't need to feed as often and subsequently are harder for anglers to catch." ....looks like last summer's shad explosion is creating a lingering effect.
