Might help to know where you are from.

You can search here: http://www.uscg.mil/nmc/approved_courses_state.asp?short=WI&long=Wi...

I receieved my credentials from World Wide Marine Training, Inc. and would recommend them but they only come to the Midwest in the offseason.

If you're just a tiny bit computer literate you could do the online course I just used...
www.marinerslearningsystem.com . It's a USCG approved course. It allows you to take up to one year from the time you log in to finish the course, which ends with a proctored exam at a testing location in your state, or one near you.
Check it out...all the info you need is there. They send you the work books, charting tools/map etc and has an online help desk, syllabus, reading material, videos, quizzes and final exams...ect...everything you need to learn.

I took three months to study the course and passed all the exams (4 in all) with 100%. If I can do it, anyone can do it.

I really enjoyed the course and the material and I highly recommend it to anyone thinking of getting their captain's lic. or who just want to learn this stuff. It's fun!
It's still 25% off the online course so it's only 600.00 right now. Check it out...

p.s. if you're on facebook they have a page there too...https://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/MarinersLearningSystem

Keep in mind the capt's "class" is just a small portion of obtaining your credentials.

You will need to be registered with homeland security, first aid and CPR trained with a USCG observed training center. You will need to pass a DOT drug screen and physical fitness screening. You will need letters of recommendation, and documented time of sea service.

Good Luck

Not to discount the last item, Documented time of sea service, but that must not be that critical. I see all these kids getting captains licenses that sure dont have much seat time. Pee in a cup and walk in by yourself to do so? Sorry jayman, I just had to.

The points made by Jayman are considerable. Beyond the cost and time of getting the licence, you have annual expenses for physicals, 1st aid training, and other credentials. You also have a 5 year window and you will have to reapply for a renewal. It is very time consuming and detailed. I would suggest you carefully look at all the obligations and determine the cost/benefit. If you are going to use the license to guide or other commercial use it is needed. I am not trying to dissuade your endevour, just put a ribbon on it.
Take care,
Capt. Jim

Stacker,

I'm not sure if that's a dig on me or what....

The time of sea service isn't very stringent. I'm not sure how well the back ground check is on that....I'm not questioning it.
Basically you need "X" amount of days in "X" amount of years. You can have documented time from a capt whose vessel you served upon. Or you can be an owner/operator to document your sea service. I forget the exact numbers to those details.

My point is, and Jim covered it clearly, getting the Capt's license takes some time and money to aquire it's not just a class and you're a capt.
