Member Posts: 181 Location: Manawa Wiscowsin | This was my first year at the Two Rivers Kiwanis Fish Derby. My fishing partner has fished the derby since it started. Neither one of us plan to fish the derby again. There are issues with the weigh in itself and with the distribution of the door prizes. The door prizes were at the weigh in. I watched for awhile. The first time I visited the weigh in tent I noticed that door prizes were given out at the whim of the weigh in staff. It was therefore no surprise that locals, friends, neighbors, or family took the lions share of the door prizes. Another time I stopped to register fish I noticed several other improprieties including observing one local, obviously known to the staff and who didn't want the door prize he drew, keep drawing tickets until he received the door prize he wanted. The last time I stopped to register fish I asked about the door prizes. I was told there were no more door prizes left even though there were prizes lying in plain sight on a table at the back of the tent. After I helped take our fish back to my partners boat I walked back to my car. Guess what I saw at the weigh in tent on my way! Another fisherman who was all buddy buddy with the weigh in staff receiving a door prize. I also have an issue with the weigh in itself. At every tournament I have been to before, the weight of the fish is displayed so everyone can see. The scale used at the derby could be seen only by the person doing the weighing. My partner had a 20+ pound (according to our scales) king the first day yet he was credited with only 19 pounds 4 ounces. IF the scale was faulty it should not have been used. The reduced weight of that king dropped it out of first place on the opening day and dropped it out of the top five for the derby.

Member Posts: 181 Location: Manawa Wiscowsin | Since the event is basically a fund raiser for the Kiwanis Club, I originally thought it was on the up and up. The leadership of the Two Rivers Kiwanis needs to clean house and make sure there isn't even an appearance of impropriety at their event. Entrants paid $35 each in advance to compete in the derby ($45 at the various marinas before fishing after the event started). I don't know how many entrants there were but it is a large tournament. There was a top prize of $10000. Plenty of incentive to cheat.
