Day one blast off at the 2011 FLW Lake Oahe event happened without a hitch and the anglers were headed to the their destinations out of Spring Creek Resort and Deep Water Marina. The overall morale was pretty high as most anglers are on fish, but hoping for the right fish.

“Finding good numbers of fish on this lake is not too difficult,” says Lund/Mercury Pro Ted Takasaki. “It’s finding the right fish that is the biggest battle. The high water conditions put the entire field on a level playing field, but the water level is falling, which makes for a difficult bite.”

The weather will play a factor as high skies and temps in the lower 90s will have an impact, but the biggest concern is the wind. A steady 20 mph wind out of the southeast, but gusting to 45 will dictate how far anglers run to find their fish. Big winds are the norm here in the Dakotas, but big lakes and big winds make for dangerous travel.

“I expect most anglers will catch fish,” explains The Reel Shot/J.J. Keller Fishing Team Pro, Brian Keller. “Its all a matter of finding the right fish. Anglers are only allowed to keep two fish over 20 inches making finding the unders essential as well. I would guess you would have to catch 13-15 lbs. today to stay in the chase, but 18 or better to remain in the hunt for first. It will be an interesting weigh-in!

Weigh in will be taking place this afternoon at 3 PM at Spring Creek Resort, updates to follow.

The first weigh in was exciting to say the least as all of the 113 boats weighed fish. Lake Oahe did not disappoint! Before the anglers took to the water this morning we knew that based on the five fish limit and only allowed to keep 2 fish over 20 inches we were not going to see weights like we did on Erie or Green Bay. Having said that, the best walleye anglers in the world showed up and demonstrated the quality fishery that exists here in Pierre, South Dakota.

“I am on the winning fish as long as conditions don’t change too much tomorrow,” says Darrell Peters, leader after Day One.” “The pattern I am on should hold, but having a 10 lbs. kicker makes a big difference in your day’s weight. I am planning on sticking to the game plan and hope to bring in a comparable bag tomorrow, but I will be happy with a solid limit and two healthy overs.

The wind was fierce for a few hours today, but laid down as the afternoon wore on allowing the anglers to stick to their game plans and find the fish they needed to pull the line. The top weight ranges from the upper 16’s into lower 20s, but the bulk of the field that weighed limits are holding in the 14-15 pound range, keeping the competition tight.

“I had an awesome day with an awesome co-angler,” explains Navionics Pro, Tommy Skarlis who is currently holding down second place with 19-08. “We found the active fish based on the pattern we found during practice, but it was far better than I expected. In fact, yesterday I was almost ready to hit the panic button, as I knew we weren’t on the winning fish. I expect the pattern to hold and hope to be as blessed as we were today, but if not, I am very thankful for the tremendous day we had.”

Cut off day starts at the same place, same time as the anglers are out to hopefully make the top 10 cut, but the angler of the year race is also in contention. If Tom Keenan manages a 17th place finish or better overall, he will lock down the $10,000 prize and AOY trophy. Walleye excitement is in full swing as tomorrow will set the stage for the final FLW regular season tournament of the 2011 season.

Day One Top 10
