Joined a couple of friends to do some silver mining this past weekend on Lake Michigan. We found some.

You seen the fun. Here's part of the Cherry Wood smoked, Brown Sugar and Honey glazed reward.

You didn't mention which port you used for launch. St. Joe/Benton Harbor? Muskegon? Ludington?

Two weeks ago, my brother and his son picked up six nice salmon/steelhead out of Michigan City. They ended up far enough north to be in Michigan water, connecting with kings 60' down in 100' of water. I think they were six of ten with the fish ranging from 6-10 pounds. He smoked his too... Northwest Salmon Candy recipe.
I went to the Traverse City area over the Labor Day weekend with my grandson. We fished Long Lake Sunday afternoon and I watched him crank in four walleyes, one big enough to keep and eight perch with five being big enough to bother cleaning. One perch, in fact, was 12", equivalent of a Lake Michigan jumbo. Sent him home with enough meat for his dad, mom, and himself to have a nice fish dinner. Funny too... we were on the water right when the big blow came in like an Alberta clipper out of the northwest. Just put the wind at our backs and trolled south, then did it all over again a 2nd time. All the fish were caught on harnesses behind inlines or bouncers.

We went out of Ludington Harbor. Almost ran into the Badger coming in from Wisconsin after dark in the fog. Then again the next morning in the fog when she went back out. Seems like we had a Badger bullseye on our boat. But that persistent NE wind pushed the warmer water out 16 miles and the close to shore waters were 46 degrees, making it foggy as hell up near shore both days. Got a trip booked with Trout Scout charters on the Big Manistee for this Saturday. I guided for 15 years on that and the Pere Marquette but never learned to three-way chug spawn back in the holes. So that's what we're going to try and learn to do this Saturday. I'll post the result Sunday Morning.

Had a couple of PM requests for my smoking recipe. The recipe works for any kind of fish, even walleye.

I chunk the fish first in the sizes you see in the picture. Then layer them 1 chunk thick, skin side down in a 6 gallon pail. After each layer I salt them lightly (or to taste) with Kosher Course Salt. After all the fish are in the pail and layered with salt, I mix 1/2 pound of Brown Sugar and 5 table spoons of Honey into a gallon of warm water and mix throughly. Pour over fish and top off (if needed) with cold water to just cover all the chunks. Let soak for 24 hours. I also pour 1 quart of apple juice into the chip pan of my Brinkman Propane smoker then pour the Cherry Wood chips on top of the apple juice to about level with the edge of the pan. The smoker heat in the straight up "IDEAL" temperature zone of the brinkman will boil off the apple juice first, quickly cooking the fish through, yet keeping the fish moist, and then the chips will start to smoke. Usually by the time the chips have burned off, the fish is done. Usually 3 hours total time. It is delicious. Good luck.

Remember the horrifying account of Todd, Jeff, John and I almost running into the Badger coming out of Ludington harbor last Saturday night and then again Sunday Morning. I was pretty sure after that hair raiser few other things could tighten my sphincter to toothpick size again. But then came this morning and running full throttle up the Big Manistee river in Lances Jet boat, in fog so thick you could not see 10 yards in front of the boat.

Of course I know that I could (and have) done that myself on the Pere Marquette River after years of fishing it and mentally knowing where all the obstacles are in the river. But when somebody else does it too me, I get a tad nervous. Anyway the Humble Pie began when we stopped and started tossing T-Stick Juniors. In that 1 1/2 hours while the fog burned off I went a miserable 1 for 6. loosing some real dandy's and finally landing a small 4 pound Jack. While Mark and Mark both landed fish in the 14 to 16 pound range. Later on though I shined through with the bobbers and skein and went 1 for 2 in the last hole we fished. Over all a 4 for 12 day.

There were literally hundreds of fish in each hole we fished. We know because you could see them scoot out of the holes when we would move. But the river is so low and clear they are simply not hitting anything during the high sunlight periods. Pictures below.

Your pictures really do show your passion for fishing - keep up the great articles as I find your writing detailed and at times humorous. Puts a person right there with you.

Thanks Johnny.

Passionate is truly the word that has best described my feeling these last 54 years about fishing. I'm glad it shows through for you in my posts.
