Spent a marathon of a Saturday, with a good Rap-Jigging fisherman. Otherwise know to the few of us on WalleyeFirst, as Trap. With little sleep, our day started at 3am, driving up through Escanaba and Gladstone, past Rapid River, and around the bay. Then pulled into the Vagabond Resort launch area. Here we unloaded the sleds and equipment, walked out a mile, and jig-fished all day. We walked off the ice (it was very slippery and will say you'll need cleats on your boots should you go!) at dark. Then after eating like ravenous wolves at the Delora Restaurant, took the 3 hour road trip and arrived back home at 9:15pm. Now thats a marathon! Otherwise, this was the first time ever I sat all day, and just jigged. Trap has developed a few techniques to entice walleyes to grab Jigging Rapalas, and it fascinated me greatly! Will volunteer this much, Trap became very excited when he read what he perceived to be a live wire on his sonar. And he was at an emotional high just before he got bit. He certianly knew what he was doing! Edited by Rick Larson 12/28/2003 1:00 PM Attachments ---------------- ![]()

I almost called my bud and canceled our scheduled LBDN trip next week. Also thought for a minute you were using my (hide your tracks) idea from my other post. So is one fish all you guys caught? And how was the ice depths, as we still plan on 4 wheeling it. Edited by walleye express 12/28/2003 9:11 AM

We caught 2 bigger ones (or rather Trap did), maybe 7-8 cigar sized fish (we had a funny debate on how long one of them was (but still to short!), and one perch. We also had a few heavies that shook the hook on the way up. Ice was a very safe 8 inches thick and there were many 4-wheelers moving around the whole of the bay from Kipling north. Although Trap said we marked alot less fish than his previous trips, I thought we had enough going to keep us interested all day - with the best action the hour before dark. If the weather stays warm with no snow, use ice cleats on your boots! It was a very good thing for me that Trap had them, as my boots had no grip at all. It was so bad, that when a gust of wind hit me, it would blow me like I was an iceboat. Here's a picture of how I made it back in. Traps my hero! I should add this caveat; if the weather gets really warm, fisherman, beware of the ice!!! If you think no one has ventured forth before you, go ask about conditions at the bait shop!

Traps my hero! Rick. I can relate to what your saying. I remember the first time after I bought my Shapell 4000 and we went to Monuscong Bay. The ice was GLARE and POLISHED from the wind. I had my cleats and my bud did not. I started augering the holes out while he opened the shanty with the door facing into the wind, like your supposed to. The wind filled the shanty, so he jumped in and the way they went across the Bay. Some cattails finally stopped him about 1/8 of a mile from where we stopped. We go nowhere now without them. Thank's for the scoop. I might bring my extra box with the 20 different jigging rapalas in it now. Any particualr color work best? My bud is sold on Hopkins spoons for LBDN. I'm of course, a Do-Jigger fan, so we'll have all the bases covered. Edited by walleye express 12/28/2003 12:41 PM

I'll start with Silver/Blue and work my way through Perch, Gold/Orange FireTiger and a few of those bastard colors they came out with last year. All of these are #7 Rapalas though. I'm assuming so where yours. I always use one rod as a flyer with a dead rig or experimental lures anyway. I'll let you all know how we do after next week. And you know I'll have some killer pictures. ![]() Edited by walleye express 12/28/2003 1:15 PM

Member Posts: 103 Location: Collins, WI | It was a good day on the water. The fishing wasn't the best but watching Rick walk against the wind on the slippery ice was like when the Jamacan bobsled team first took the ice. We used #5's cause the action was too slow for me to go big. As far as color goes tie on a gold and black and use it all day and you'll do just fine. If it's bright and sunny use glow tiger. I have a plethera of colors and if the fish are on they all work. Moving around a bit to find active fish helps but please stay far away from fisherman. I have driven close to people in the past and regret being inconciderate. With the thin ice that we have now the noise really affects the fish. We had a guy drive past us several times yesterday and I have to believe it hurt our fishing. Good luck everyone and remember to keep an eye on the changing ice conditions.
