I'm hearing second hand info that the Bay South of Gladstone is open and there are boats out fishing. Can anyone confirm this? If it's a known truth, where are they launching? Would love to hit it one or two more times if possible.

Marty Papke called me this morning from up there and said a large portion of the bay was wide open. I doubt that will last any longer than tomorrow night with the current temps out there.

Here's to hoping for ice real soon up there. I know this is a very odd statement from me, but the Kids Ice fest I help run every year (one of the original founders of this event) is in early February and we need to see at least a foot of ice for us to feel comfortable enough in running the event.

It is generally the first weekend in Feb and all my sponsors and Outdoors First Media are sponsors to name but a few.

Our lowest attendance ever was last season with just under 100 kids. Our best was the year of my fishing partners passing with over 300 kids. These numbers do not include parents and volunteers.

I will be issuing a press release very soon and of course, you will be the first to know.

Steve,

The portion of the Bay that Marty has reported as open has been that way all year. It hasn't iced over yet and I don't think last night's temps. or the next 3-4 night's temps will ice it over. It's not supposed to get below 25 degrees in Escanaba over the next few nights. The big concern is whether a launch is open enough to get a boat in the water. The only launch I believe that might be open is the Escanaba River launch. I know the Gladstone and Escanaba Harbor launches have been frozen in since about 12/10.

If someone gets up that way and gets the chance to see if the Escanaba River launch is open, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Jerry.

Me and a couple buds will be up there probably the 2nd and 3rd of January, hopefully fishing on safe ice out from Vagabond Park. Probably be staying in Rapid River for the night in a Motel. I'll ask as many locals who I think would know about the River Launch.

Did this warm weather the last two days and the huge winds today goof up the ice?
