Picture in your head the basin of the lake and no rock. The structure is the schools of forage....... oh, you did not mean that kind of open water.........nevermind!

Water at 35 to 36, still a little chilly I figure. Jiggers did well. Some larger females. IWT has two tournaments next week, one on sat and one on sun. Giddy up.

Member Posts: 1195 Location: Orland Park, IL | Well...after two postponements we were finally able to host the J.J's-9th Annual Walleye & Sauger Event, Sunday on the Illinois River. Ice and flood waters have prevented us from getting this event in on the past two scheduled dates. But, Mother Nature finally cooperated with us and we had an excellent event. Twenty five, three person teams decided to brave the cold and kick the cabin fever bug yesterday. Most of them with high hopes of finding the winning sack of sauger and just excited to finally get on open water. The river conditions are in great shape at his point in terms of clarity, ice and visibility is near 18"-20", which is great for this time of year. The only factor holding the bite back a bit is the extremely cold water temps. Sunday the temperature was between 35.5 and 36 degrees keeping the saugers from really putting on the feed bag. Saturday the temps were closer to 39 and the bite was much better, so we are just days away from the spring bite being on fire. Despite the cold water temps and take-off air temps of 16 degrees there were still some really nice fish brought to the scales. A total of 75 sauger and 4 walleyes crossed the scales for a total weight of 128.28 pounds or an average of 1.62 per fish. Nine teams were able to bring a limit to the scales and only three teams blanked. Congratulations to the winning team of Ryan Vecchia, Rick Parrott and Mike Tatera for weighing 5 sauger for 10.11 pounds good for $1,000. They also weighed the largest fish of the event a 3.9 sauger earning them an additional $250! The jigging trio focused their efforts all day downstream of the take-off site near the ADM grain elevator vertical jigging in 22-26 feet of water. The winners used a combination of plastics and live bait and said the plastics out performed the live bait threaded on 3/8 oz. Doc's Custom Jigs!
