So, being sensitive (argggg) in this day and age of social media and being in touch with feelings (yada, yada, yada), wondering when the kids were ready for a week of fishing with no cable, no games, no luxuries.....just fishing and relaxation. Should I wait til he's older? A few years maybe? Just trying to get a step on the vibe for this summer.

Take a break now and then to play tourist, swim, sleep in or just chill with dad. He'll love it till Wednesday if you burn him out.

Member Posts: 2680 Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | Mark. Vacations of this type started as far back as I can remember with my Dad. He sued for and got cutody of my brother and I at a very young ages (3 & 4) after he and my mother divorced. Something unheard of back in the mid-1950's. And now that I think of it, probably even more-so today for very different cultural and selfish reasons. But trips like these were an extension of my Fathers love for us, as he loved the sport as much as any man could. I'm 62 years old now, but the sites and even the smells associated with these trips are still a very warm trigger in my own mind whenever I happen to again sense them. I'm not sure what hold these newer modern distraction would have had on me if they were present back then, but I know I didn't miss the ones we did have back home when fishing or hunting with dad. For both his and your sake, I hope you can capture and create even part of the memories and what it meant to me with your own son Mark. Edited by walleye express 3/25/2014 8:12 AM

Member Posts: 1195 Location: Orland Park, IL | All good ideas. Dont get me wrong, I have taken him fishing alot since a very early age, but like dennis mentioned it wasnt totally fishing. So, a decent hotel, with cable, a pool, etc. This would be a little different and your right, would hate to burn him out. Edited by Mark Komo 3/25/2014 8:45 AM

Location: Rhinelander | As mentioned above. if he decides to stay in while you go out, that's cool, go out or he'll feel bad. Offer to do some tourist stuff. Try to find cute girls his age close by. Well, maybe that is a tall order. He can bring his iPod, or similar, to keep electronically attached to at least some games.

Member Posts: 3899 | Mark, 13 is a good age to take the week vacation. As mentioned, don't make it all fishing, all the time. Take some time to let him wander, explore, eat at a McDonalds or whatever he likes. Heck, let him bring the XBox along with a small DC powered TV. Allow him to play just enough to keep him from burning out as mentioned. Both my kids took week long trips, and if the fishing is good, they'll spend less time wanting to do other things. And change up fish and tactics, too. If you can find a numbers pike lake, that can be a blast for them. Good luck! Have fun!
