Had a good day today went west this am and east this evening. Gettin jiggy wit it all day, I was amazed again at the number of walleyes in the river along with carp sturgeon suckers sheephead. It was very quiet and only one other shack off in the distance and dark in the shack except for a little light coming from the snow around my feet and the camera in a bucket on a 5 gallon pail this tight space requires me to put one foot on either side of my 9" hole thru 18" of ice. I was in a one man shack (pretty small) and was gleaming at the camera and focused on a couple walleyes eyeing up my bait when I caught a glimse of something beneath the ice as wide as my hole. My first thought was a big sturgeon as it was Black and moving ever so slowly, second thought was maybe I should just reach down and grab it, (timespan about 2 seconds) then all of a sudden these two paws reach up and grab the ice and this big black head pops out with big black eyes. I'm still tryin to get the crustations out of my shorts. I was never so scared as this thing was inches from my crotch as I kicked it in the head and flew out of my shack. I'm sure he was as scared as I was but I never expected to get attacked in an ice shanty in below zero temps! This little Otter was about 3 feet long and got the best of this ole guy! I think I have a few things to add to the dropped down the hole thread as my shanty became a disaster in a hurry. I'm going back tomorrow but think I'll be packin heat!
Good Luck
Tyee

That reminds me of the time a few years back when my buddy caught a muskrat on Partridge Lake. I can still see this big galoot jumping around and screaming "get him off, get him off!!!!!". We didn't get that many fish but that made our whole season.

Otter beater! Where's PETA when you really need them? Hehe

As a "Yute", spents hours and hours casting spoons of the Northside Pier here in Manitowoc. Course, if you spend enough time at it, sooner of later your line is going to meet up with a seagull.

And they get very ornery when it happens!

Samething happened to me while jigging for pannies on a lake in Madison. It was a slow day so I decided to nod of for awhile, suddenly Iheard a splash, I woke up and sitting right by my feet was this little critter. I instantly screamed like a little girl and flew out of the shanty. Others around me were looking like what the .... I looked back in the shanty and he was gone. I fished a little longer and seen bubbles coming up. There he was again, popped his head out of the hole and looked at me for a few seconds and dropped back down. I think he was after my venison sausage.

Muskrat love,

Happens all the time to me on the ice in madison.
They come to the hole to get some air a few times, and then jump out to warm up a little bit and head back down the hole.
Shack is big enough for the both of us.
Just hope not to hook him down there.
Very entertaining.
