My brother Guy and I left Collins at 4:00 this morning to ice some Great Lakes 'Eyes. We stopped for coffee and bait and then drove out on the ice. It wasn't bad when you had tracks to follow but breaking trail was a bit difficult. We got off the beaten path and headed out to a quiet spot only to end up high centered on the hard snow. After digging for 10 minutes I broke the shovel. Next time we will have 2 shovels, so I spent another 30 minutes under the Chevy using the shovel end like a dust pan digging franticly because I wanted to get fishing. We got out and got close to where we wanted to be and set up shop. Getting there late I was afraid we were going to miss the morning bite. Guy was set up in minutes and marking fish while I had a wild idea of setting a tip-up in the shack. After wasting 5 minutes of my valueable jigging time I finnally was settled in at 8:30. We marked some fish but not too many and at 9:12 I popped a 27 inch male. He came sraight up makeing small circles which was nice 'cause my tip-up was only 4 feet away and he didn't tangle. Things died instantly after that besides a few perch coming through. At 3:30 I marked a nice walleye and thought it was going to bite but it didn't. Ten minutes later I caught a 27 inch female and that one didn't tangle either. Nothing on the tip-up, both were caught jigging a spoon tipped with a minnow due to the neutral mood of the fish. Had a few perch on jigging raps and small eyes but no leagals. We left at 4 so we would have a better chance of getting off the ice by dark. It was a good day on the water!

trap,
Sounds like a great trip despite the snow. I carry a wide garden spade on the ice, as it doubles for a scraper and chopper, too, and won't break. Send Zach a picture or two of the nice 'eyes!

Also, would you mind posting this report on www.icefishingfirst.com? We get quite a few questions about LBDN there.

Thanks!

Good job Trap. But next time bring your camera!

Hey, really sorry I didn't come along, but made a pile a money at the Oshkosh Sportshow. Next time I can afford to buy breakfast!

Rick you know I don't have a digital camera, but I do have Polaroids of the fish. Had over 50 panfish this afternoon, it was a ball!

Get one, they are cheap!

Hmmm, wonder if I can find my old one. If so, will send it your way.

I was up this past week-end also and yes getiing stuck was our norm also. We had a number of fish but only one that was 21 the rest were small. If they get any more snow it will be very tuff to get around even compared to now.
