Hey guys, Don't laugh, But I'm wondering what jig pole to bring next weekend, got some poles but afraid they won't be heavy enough? Length and action? something like 34" heavy?

All you usually feel on those fish up there is a tick, amazing that a 10 lber. only makes a tick instead of a thump. Go lighter is my opinion, you will have more fun fighting them too.

If your operating in a shack, that rod is going to be way to long and you will have it bumping the wall. 20 - 24 inches is a good length - its also good for a quick hook-set - and medium heavy is the best as you need to sink the hooks into that hard toothy jaw!

Agree with Dave 100%. Having a heavy/stiff meat stick when ice fishing is a deficit versus an asset. Most often the walleyes I cath will first tick the offering like a perch, then just put a load on the rod tip versus a solid strike. You'll pull more hooks out on the set and tear more out while playing the fish with stiff rods. Get a medium/light rod that you can see every little/suttle take and torque into an inverted Ugly-Stick "U" shape before the drag breaks free on the reel. You'll then have the perfect rod for a hundred different applications, including coaxing BIG gators into the ice hole. If you seen my Berkley Rough neck rods, you'd swear they were BlueGill rods. But I can put some major lifting pressure once they get hooked. Edited by walleye express 2/12/2004 10:09 AM

Member Posts: 103 Location: Collins, WI | It depends on the depth your fishing. In the shallows a forgiving rod might be a better choice, but in deep water you need a stiff rod to get the hooks in the fish. A reel with a good smooth drag is a must. If you spend $100 for a open water reel you should spend $100 on a hardwater reel. I've watched fish inhale a jigging rap and spit it. With a limber rod you didn't even know you had a bite. The line is more inportant than the rod in my opinion.

Location: Rhinelander | Rob, I use a Frabill Amplifier rod for the walleye and pike jigging I do, with 4 to 6# test on a medium light action. I took a day off today and fished with Sue, my son Keith, and Theedz, a friend from MuskieFIRST. I caught a 5# pike on that exact rod, no problem. The drag worked flawlessly. We kicked the fish around some, had a great day!

Member Posts: 198 Location: Gladstone, Michigan 49837 | gotta' agree with Steve, been using the Amplifier Rods from Frabill in medium action and doing fine on fish. Being lightweight makes for a comfortable rod for fishing throughout the day. I'm generally running 10 pound Fire-Line or 8 pound XL and doing fine. Jigging size baits and #5 and #7 jigging Raps, 1/4 ounce Fire-Eye Minnows and just plain 1/8 ounce leadhead jigs tipped with either a tail hooked minnow or head hooked. Hoping this answers some of your questions. Capt. Marty http://www.littlebaydenoc.com

Location: Rhinelander | The fireline treats you well, Marty? i use it (believe it or not) on my crappie rods, and SMOKE 'em. Only trouble I have is using a slip bobber with it.
