| Me and a friend of mine were out deer shining tonight out in the Brillion marsh, and we were pulled over by a warden, i believe his last name was disher, and i must say i was not very happy, he followed us for close to a half mile with no lights on on his vehicle, and then pulled us over because he said he was concerned we were drunk, fine and dandy no big deal, he did his little check to make sure there were no firearms or anything illegal, and then made us step out of the vehicle and lift up our shirts because he thought we might have guns under them?! now i dont know what you guys think but i think that was pretty bad, he had no reason to believe anything was wrong and there wasnt, then he told us we had better not be littering because there are alot of people who litter and said nothing in the back of the truck better be thrown out on the road. I dont know but i was not very satisfied, i just thought he conducted himself in a very unproffessional way. |

| If you weren't doing anything wrong, you should be happy the warden is out there checking out guys. I don't think he did anything unprofessional from what you've said. I wish I saw more wardens out patrolling. Just like everyone alse there may be a few that aren't quite as friendly as we'd like them to be, but anytime I've been checked they have been very decent. Do you ever read the "Cuffs and Collars" section of the WON? There are so many violators out there it is unbelievable. I certainly don't fault a warden for being thorough. It seems like a small price to pay for knowing someone is out there making sure people aren't dropping off tires in the ditch and road hunting in an area it sounds like you hunt. Just my opinion...... Dave S |

Location: Appleton wi | I agree thumper except for the officer driving on a public road at night with his lights off wich could have resulting in serious car crash ? Being more of a hazard on the road is not very proffesional. I for one would like to thank the DNR in the fine job they have done for this state they have alot to take credit for with are fine natural resources in this state. To the original post it just goes to show what mind set they have to perform in there daily job in the field and there could have been something more going on there than you realize you may have been in the wrong place at the wrong time. |

| I have been checked at least a dozen times fishings and twice hunting - none shinning but I must say they have been friendly in all cases - They are out there to do their job, some things they do might "t" a person off however it's good there out there.
And believe me, they are there - especially when you don't think so! I have some stories.

| ya it's just fine with me but when he askes more than 5 times if we have any weapons and asked us 3 times if we had any alchohol it's a little ridiculous, and yes driving down the road with no headlights on for a half mile doesn't seem very safe to me, and yes there is a problem with littering, but there really isn't a need to accuse us of going to throw stuff out on the road just because its in the back of the truck. I guess its all ligitamite questions to ask once or twice but no to ask over and over to have us pulled over for 10 minutes, but thats just my point of view, |

Location: Brillion, Wi | I was out shining the same area that night and also was checked. I was stopped on the road watching some deer, and he pulled up next to us and asked if we had been seeing anything, I said a few, then asked if we had any firearms, I told him no and told him to get out and check if he wished. That is when he turned on his interior light and first I. D. himself. I got out of my truck before he did, and he came around his truck and just shined in the windows on my suburban and sent us on our way. It is good to see them out once in a while to keep everyone honest! Just wondering who THE MAN is, reply back and let me know. |

| Compliments to warden Disher on his efforts last weekend, by leaving a note that if there were any further concerns regarding the previous encounter to contact him with his number BUT it was after reading this post that he did make the effort |

| sounds like a scene from deliverance - did he have 'dueling banjos' playing in his vehicle? |

| Not to my knowledge, but who knows |

| Just a routine tactic to see if your answers chgd from 1st to last (border patrol questioning tactic), just imagine him pulling over 2 fellas he doesn't know. I would think if the answers chgd or showed hesitation to answer he probably would of called in for a backup, since there were two of you. Its a hard job they do and low pay for there dangerous encounters. |

| I won't dispute that, my whole concern was simply a matter of respect |

| The warden had every right to do what he did.Why are you pissed? you should be glad he is out doing his job. |

| State statute allows wardens to operate their squats without lights on in an attempt to catch people doing stuff they shouldnt be doing. Also, policy and the statute also have restrictions which wardens must follow when doing this to avoid an unsafe situation for both the public and themselves.
Chances are that there have been complaints in the area you were in regarding shining and shooting, littering etc. Although it wasnt you that was doing these things, the warden was doing his job of making sure you were not in violation.
Keep in mind they keep very poor hours, work long hours, and for the most part(due to lack of proper coverage) only catch a very small percentage of violators. Thank God we have the wardens we do because there wouldnt be a whole lot of oppourtunities out there if they weren't. |

| First of all, how many people don't work long hours, i'm sure most people on this board including myself work more hours in a week than any warden does, so i dont feel sorry in the least bit for them working long hours and this and that because that is life, and no i also dont have any respect for someone who acts like an ass to me, i really dont care if what he did that night was legal or not, but i do expect some common courtesy at least a little more than was shown to us. |

Location: Oshkosh, WI | The good thing about this thread is that it has given a number of people the opportunity to express positive sentiments toward wardens. Wardens have a thankless, dangerous job that most of them got into because they love the outdoors and want to protect the natural resources. My guess is that after they become wardens they find that they work for an agency that is being stripped of its resources, that many in the public treat them as the enemy and that they have to few resources and personnel to do their jobs adequately.
Before you ask, I am not a warden, the only warden I know in this area is the one that gave me a ticket last spring and my work has nothing to do with law enforcement. In fact, one part of my job is career counseling. One thing I always tell people who want to go into law enforcement because they want to "help people" is that they need to remember for every person that says "thanks", ten will treat them like the enemy.
So let me add my thanks to all of you who work to protect the natural resource. I think you are doing a great job. |

| Not saying all wardens are this way, but MOST just want our money, they don't care what's going on in the outdoors. |

| What a stupid thing to say!!! They want your $$. What $. You actually thinks they make the big bucks. Dead wrong and a dumb thing to say. I would imagine a warden choses his profession because he cares about natural resources and likes to be outside along with everyone else. They don't deserve half the crap they have to put up with. They need to be aggresive in trying to catch people. So whats the big deal, you get a ticket for something at some point and whine about it or what. If you're not doing anything wrong why worry or make a big fuss. so maybe the warden was short and to the point, he's probably trying to catch a guy who's gonna be a big jerk to them. |

| I wouldn't say they want our money, and some wardens may do a good job, others may not, it is not any different than any other profession, as for previous encounters i haven't ever had any resons to say that any of them were doing a poor job. But from my dealing with our warden here in Calumet county, i also probobly would not say he was doing a poor job, but i certainly would not say that he was doing a good one, that is one man who does not have my personal respect, professional respect well i think that he may have some of that |
