| I use 'three ways' and other live bait rigs alot. Is there any reason to look at hook color on the rig, or does that even matter? I see red, gold, grey, and nearly black on the shelves. Do you have a preference? | |||

Even though we'll never know why or what a fish actually perseves in the different colored hook, baits or lures, or why he's drawn to one over the other. But being a good fishermen means taking notes and keeping book on what they do prefer over others. And this preference can change from lake to lake and season to season. But the color Red, rather in hooks, crankbait bellys or diving bills, or a simply throat patch or gill slit drawn on with a marker seems to have made the difference in a lot of applications. I would think changing just the front hook to red on a crank might trigger some. The small flash of the gold hook sticking out of the minniow, has to trigger the what dose he got there strikes. Member Posts: 363 Location: Kaukauna WI | I have wondered the same thing many times and heard many expliations on why use red or blue or purple. For myself I use alot of red or blue hook cominations but I have 4 to 5 other color hooks in boat also in my hook box. I mainly think you need to look at aplication you are fishing and water color to choose write product color I have came to realize that all hooks are not the same and recently started using Owner Hooks and found they stay sharper and keep a edge longer when you hitting them on hard surfaces like rocks. Member Posts: 188 Location: Westland, Mich. | i keep 3 colored hooks in my box: red, green and black. i tie all my own snells and always try to match the hook color to blend as much as posible with the beads and blades on my harnesses. when using plain hooks i go with the black as i want the bait to be the focus.

Location: Rhinelander | Red hooks were a big deal this year for the Muskie guys. Several of the really serious muskie anglers swear they make a big difference.

| Red hooks and the TechnaGlow hooks from Lindy are a staple in my rig box. Black? Going to have to try those, thanks for the tip. | |||

| Red seem better than plain....techniglows as mentioned seem as good or better than reds...favorite is flourescent/glow in the dark in either the pale super light green, chart, orange or pink. I try to use the same colors in hooks that work in jigs. ONE LITTLE PROBLEM TO LOOK OUT FOR IS THAT A LOT OF THE POWDER PAINTS AND ESPECIALLY THE TEFLON COATED HOOKS ARE EXTREMELY SLIPPERY....SO I ALMOST ALWAYS WRAP A COUPLE MORE TIMES ON THE IMPROVED CINCH OR PASS THE LINE THROUGH THE EYE A SECOND TIME, and both on the teflon. | |||

Member Posts: 29 Location: Ontario, Canada | Hey guys, been using fluorescent hooks in colored water and red hooks in clear water and my outtings have been great. On my spinners I use the red hook on top and a black hook on the bottom and it's been very good for me. In the colored water, fluo. chart, orange and glow in the dark.

Location: Rhinelander | Has anyone here noticed any advantage to the red hooks? Are they more/less/ evenly effective as other colors? Here's an example of what us crazy muskie anglers do with red hooks. Attachments ---------------- DSCF0024.JPG (34KB - 132 downloads)
