Location: Rhinelander | We probably have about three weeks or so in Rhinelander, WI if we have an average freeze up date. When do your favorite waters freeze, if at all?

That is usually done on ice not much thicker than 2 inches or thinner. The saving grace is, that your only going to get wet up to your knees if the ice fails you during this time.

Member Posts: 714 | I've walked out and fished walleyes on Mille Lacs the weekend of deer opener (first week of Nov.) and there are times when I haven't been able to walk out till close to Christmas. It seems to me that the trend for sometime now has been later than sooner!

Man, it scared the B-Jesus out of me. If this trend stays in the "Late Mode" I for one won't be to dissapointed. Edited by walleye express 11/5/2004 2:04 PM

Member Posts: 540 Location: Milw, WI | As soon as it will hold me up with out cracking. 2 of my best never get more than 2 inches just to many springs. I only ice fish till every body else get the bug. Then I move back to open water, with a few ice trips in there. I would say my ice fishing is over on Jan 1st when all the yahoos get out. Member Posts: 2567 Location: Manitowoc, WI | If I've had too many beers and I feel bloated, I'll switch to Whiskey/Coke on the rocks......that's the closest I get to switching to ice!!! However, I did committ to taking Troy to Bay de Noc and showing him where I used to catch nice fish on early ice. So, once there's 3-5 inches I'll venture out.

(Although I usually go Crown & Coke first before ending with a couple beers... "beer before liquor never sicker...liquor before beer never fear...or something like that" Sorry but 3 out of 4 weekends we've had Gale Force winds here on Erie and I'm pulling my boat tomorrow has me more than a bit bummed out.... I've borrowed your quote Dennis - I give credit though when anyone is around that knows you. Actually my idea of ice fishing is getting a package of frozen perch or walleye from Lake Erie out of the freezer... Steve

Location: Rhinelander | Lows in the 20's and 30's this week, highs in the thirties and low 40's. Winter is definitely just around the corner in Rhinelander!

Member Posts: 1656 | Typically I prefer to switch to ice when the temps get in the 80+ range.....then I go from cold beer to ICE in my vodka lemonades Seriously, December for panfish. If it weren't for sturgeon spearing I'd be happy with open water fishing year round. Now that the PWT has uncovered this gem called Bullshoals.......I think I've found an answer for using the boat all 12 months of the year.

Member Posts: 116 Location: Germantown and Land O Lakes, WI | Just took a look at the 4 day forecast for Land O Lakes Wi. If the trend holds, there may be 2-3" of hard water by the Wis gun/deer opener in a couple of weeks. I've winterized my boats and icefished the same weekend up there a few years ago, that was the 2nd weekend in Nov.

Location: Rhinelander | 18 degrees today when I got up, pretty brisk out there! Looks like m40's for highs next week and 30's for lows, so not much ice making next week.

| Well since I've upgraded my gear to a Frabil exployer and Strikemaster laser last season and fished every possible evening on the weekends it will be sooner than later, reminds me to pick up that shelter licence and an aerator for the minnies. | |||
