Hey guys, just thought I would throw in my 2 or maybe 4 cents worth of friendly advice on this matter. There were a couple of guys at the class that I took that had taken classes from an institution that was not accredited by the Coast Guard and did not pass the final test that the Coast Guard testing sites give. They said that like 2 out of 17 people actually passed. My advice would be to find a school that is coast guard accredited and if not really think twice about taking your chances. If you are really serious about this I would give World Wide Marine Training a call at 866-249-2135 and talk to Captain Larry Walker. If you have enough people interested they will set up classes in your area, atleast thats what they did for us. I think that this is a prime example of you get what you pay for. Good luck and have a great day.

Dennis and BOLA,
Captain Dan and others have made excellent points pointing out costs and also dangers of various training groups. The group that Lauren used is the same as the testing I completed last October in Milwuakee.
In our case, Capt Bob Townsend was able to get our CPR and First Aid done on site. We also had Fingerprinting and Coast Gaurd personel to sign the necessary documents. One stop shopping. I would speculated this was because of the cooperation and facitlities in the Milwuaukee area.
I would be very leary of anyone who claims they can teach you all you need to know in a day or two. It is important that the teacher and company you sign up with is authorized to teach and test for the license.
If not, you may be in for an unpleasant testing experience at the Coast Guard facilities.
We had one member of our class who took a week of intense classes in Manitowoc area, only to find out, on the last day, that the class was not authorized by the Coast Guard and they could not test at the class.
The class Lauren and I took are intensive and prepare you to cruise thru the tests with confidence. If you want a captains license, I strongly recommend taking this course.
Take care,
Jim Ordway
