Well before I can remember and into the late 60's few other walleye offerings were more in vogue than the crawler harness. And even in today's (high-tech) walleye world, the simple harness seem to come and go in the popularity contest we call fishing. In the past couple of seasons my own interest in the crawler harness has again become important to me. This due as much out of necessity and environmental changes on my particular body of water as anything else. With the much clearer waters, forage preferences and feeding habits of our (new generation) walleyes, I've again become a harness experimenter. And last year I noticed a distinct preference from the walleyes for my color matched harnesses. Those being the ones I tried to keep in the same color scheme with both the blades and the beads. I guess you could logically conclude that this type of pattern scheme, would create a more positive strike reaction from a walleye, once you hit on his (feed button) color preference. Heres a picture of a few I had success with last year. How many of you practice Fashion Sense when it come to harness colors? I use several types that range in size from 6mm to 8mm, round or faceted. These are a combination of both in the 6mm sized beads, with 5mm flat PONY BEADS used for spacers. You can only buy the PONY beads (from what I've seen) in craft stores. I got these from Jo-Anne fabric center. You get a bag of about 2000 for about 3 bucks. The wife actually turned me onto the Jo-Annes idea. Edited by walleye express 1/12/2005 8:59 AM

Fact is, 90% of new ideas are simply old one's being revisited. ![]() ![]() And Paul. I know what you mean about the burs and sharp edges on some cheaper made beads. These PONY beads though are quit smooth inside and out. They're made to be used in conjunction with fabric and nylon thread, and women are quit particular about snags in their fabrics. Or at least that's what I heard. ![]()

Hey Dan, Where did you get those blades from? What size blades do you run in the bay? Do you run inline sinkers or jets? thanks

Do you run inline sinkers or jets? thanks I got the blades from Franks Great Outdoors http://www.franksgreatoutdoors.com They buy blades in bulk, package and sell them. So I really dont know what brand name they are. As far as size, I have better luck running big blades. 5's 6's Colorados and even 7's in Indiana style, were all hot for me last year. I call the big #7 My thumpers. The Brass baldes, teamed with Rootbeer and Chartreuse beads kicked butt last year for me, ran behind weighted keels and/or attractors. Caught fish on both Gulp and live crawlers on those. Heres a pictutre of my biggest thumper fish last summer that came on a Gulp Worm. PS. Do you think I had my riviera planner boards out far enough that day? ![]() ![]() Edited by walleye express 1/12/2005 11:41 PM Attachments ---------------- ![]()

Member Posts: 19 | I just recently started tying my own rigs. One night last month when the wife came home from shopping and saw all my plano boxes of stuff and me stringing away at the kitchen table. She thought it was cute that I was making all hand made Christmas decorations this year! Bill

Member Posts: 43 | I have generally used bead colors coordinated with the color of the blades. Interesting to see that fish catching success can be related to it as well. My wife came up with a good name for the activity when she sees me tying rigs..."Arts and crafts for fishermen"

Member Posts: 38 Location: Laurel, MT | Back in the pre - 9-11 days, I could get away with tying them on the airplane. I would tie, normally two hook harnesses, string beads (my vote is YES on the color matching) and quick change clevises. I ended up on a flight with a buddy that fished a little, but had never tied any harnesses so we were sitting next to each other in first class and I pull out the plano box and line and start not only tying, but teaching him. We had tied a dozen or so when the female flight attendant (of 2, one male, one female) comes back laughing. She tells me that the male flight attendant had pulled her to the side and said, "Did you see that big guy in row 4 that is making necklaces?!?!" She started laughing and explained to him that they were not necklaces, we were in fact, tying flies! hahah I got quite a laugh out of that one!! The even funnier part is that after that, I made my wife a necklace out of beads and a blade with matching earrings! I will try to find them and get a picture posted. Honsie
