Well, I’ve made it home for a day, and am taking this chance to come on line and say “HI” to everyone, and offer a fishing report for Mille Lacs.

The season has been pretty good so far, even with all the cooler temps and endless rain we’ve had this spring. The bite has really started to heat up in the last couple days since we got this hot spell of weather. The best bite for some time during the day was on mid depth rocks, and gravel humps. Water temps had been holding in the low to mid 60’s for some time, and have just started to climb recently with the hotter weather we had over the last few days. Yesterday the surface water temp out on the flats read 68.7. The shallow water rock bite has not really started to go yet since most of the perch and smaller baitfish have not moved up into the shallow water yet. It seems everything is running a couple weeks behind normal. The mud bite, as well as the deep gravel bite, started to pick up a week or so ago, and is improving daily.

Just to give you an idea how far behind we are this year, the smallmouth bass are up on their beds and just starting to spawn. Normally, they’d be long done with the spawn and moved out to more normal summer locations. Also, I have not seen a single musky up in the shallows yet this season either. They will probably start showing up in the next week as the perch finally start to move up into the bays and weed beds.

As for the walleyes, well, you have to weed though a lot of small fish in order to get some decent keepers. Last Friday (6-17) I had 4 people out on a 4 hour trip, and we caught 57 fish. 5 were over the 20” slot and were released, we kept 8 fish that were between 15-19.5”, and the rest were all too small to keep. Another guide I work with had an all day trip with 4 people and caught 89 fish for the day, with 11 keepers. The next day, he went back the same area with another group of 4 people and caught 137 fish, with 17 keepers. All these fish were taken using slip bobbers and leeches in 14-20’ rocks. Yesterday, I took my wife out and we played around on the mud flats and had a great day staying away from all the crowds. 4 hours of fishing produced 23 fish. We only kept 2 for a Fathers Day gift for my dad, and released the rest. Almost every fish over 16-17” is fat and chunky, really healthy, but these smaller fish are not like that at all. They are much more like saugers. In other words, they look a little skinny. I’m convinced that these smaller fish are hungry because they don’t have enough food right now. We need some more bug hatches, and hopefully a good minnow hatch this year to rebuild the forage base with small minnows for all these little fish. There is plenty of 6” and larger perch for the larger walleyes to feed on, but the small ones are the ones hurting. That’s why the small fish are on such a suicide bite. They’re starving!

Anyway, hope everyone is having a great summer and catching lots of fish. If any of you are going to be around Mille Lacs, give me a call, and I’ll share any info I have to help you get on some fish. Just click on my profile and go to my web site for my number.
