Butch:

You usually do not have to get a new unit. Is this the same problem and unit you had at the last tournament? If I recall changing foot controls did not fix the problem? If that's the case, I would guess that you need a new gyro or head. How old is the unit? Any possibility of it being under warranty?

It's a comon problem from the unit being pounded a little in big waves. A good reliable Minn Kota repair center can take care of you.

If I were to venture a guess, I'd say it's the gyro. Ask Minn Kota for a replacement gyro. I had one go out once and the thing would only go left.

no Dennis its not that one its the one on my Bay Liner its about five or six years old. The one on my partners boat had to be replaced it was under waranty. They could make it turn both ways but then the auto pilot wouldnt work then they got the auto pilot to work but manualy it would only turn right. Yes mine only turns right also not left now that I think about it. I will check on the gyro thanks I really apreciate the quick response Dennis and Jerry.

If you are using the foot control, you could try cleaning the pin connections in the plug between the foot control and motor. I had a similar problem, and found that to be the solution.

Since it's not the same unit, try using someones foot control first to see if the problem goes away. If the problem disappears most likely you have dirt/sand in the foot control unit and it needs to be cleaned. If no, I'll go with my original guess.

It's probably the contacts on the foot remote. Had the same problem. Pull the spring off under the petal, and go from there, it's not a complicated fix.

The same thing can happen if you have a low power supply getting to the motor.

If it turns left while on AP, but not manual, you know the steering motor is working, so it would have to be somewhere in either the pedal, the contact between the pedal and the control board, or the board itself, or as I said, low power supply.

FYI, if you decide that you want, or need to get yourself a new bowmount, Minn-Kota has a new model coming out later this summer that you might want to wait for if you fish much strong current, or have a pretty heavy boat. The new motor is a 101# thrust AP with co-pilot and universal sonar available. Plus it will be available with a longer shaft than what is out there today.
