Subject: GOOD FRIDAY FISHING FORECAST * SUGGESTIONS

Been many years since I fished Fremont. My father and brothers and I used to fish on Good Fridays. Used to stay at Red Banks. Would like to take my 2 boys fishing this Good Friday. Can anyone give me any suggestions as to where we might be able to pick up a few walleyes and or white bass.

Good Friday fishing has always been our families tradition and I would like my boys to experience the GREAT times of fishing the Wolf river as I did as a young boy.

We have a 14" alumacraft boat. Where can we launch ?? Any good local bait shops ?? My grandfather and father used to own a baitshop and wholesale bait business in southeast wisconsin in Wilmot for many years.

Any help or suggestions anyone can give to help make our Good Friday fishing something to remember would be GREATLY appreciated.

THANKS...

Good Friday should be a great day on the Wolf. The spawn should be over and the walleyes will be heading downriver in big numbers. The fishermen will be there in equally big numbers. If you have history in Freemont you can continue the legacy. There is a good launch there and Ma's bait shop is just west of the bridge for bait and info. Get there early to beat the crowd or plan on fishing after dark for the best bite. I suspect the jig bite will be good but good ol wolf river rigs can also be productive. You can go to Wolfrivercountry.com for more contact info. There are also many other launches up and down the river.
Have fun.

I'd keep that 14 foot boat fishing in a no wake zone. The river is kind of like the difference in highway 110 from years ago and the new 45, more traffic, moving faster. Should be fish all over.

Doc,
Good idea on the no-wake suggestion. Could you list the areas that are no-wake?
It has been a long time since I have been on the river because of the high speed traffic along some areas.

Thanks for you input.

Just a note to let you guys know that the PWT has a rule against any PWT contestant making a wake above Gills Landing starting on Friday. So if somebody blows by you above Gills - it wasn't a PWT guy and if it was - there should be a name on the motor that you can report.

Just about every bend on the river from Fremont to Guth's is marked as no wake. Some are just the corner and pretty short and some, like in town in Fremont, at Gill's and the set of bends from "Knipple beach", (just above colic slough) to the "cut off", are pretty long. Just look for the bouy's.

Fireman,I'm from NE Ilinios and frequented Sonny's many times.I remember there were some really nice walleyes in the bait tank, once, before the Chain was stocked.I asked were they were from and was told the Wolf! That was in the early to mid '70s.Now the shop is gone as is the dam.

HOW COOL !!! Sonnies was my grandfathers shop and Sonny's was my fathers shop. Same place, Same family, different names. Oh yes. the fish in the tank in the minnow room. Many good stories told about those fish but every story was true. Only fish that we knew where they came from and who caught them ever made it in the "fish tank".

Many good memories from growing up at the shop. Lots of hard work but the best life you could ask for. Great way to grow up..

Hey thanks for the post.

Well to warm up for our Good Friday trip my youngest son and my brother and I went fishing Thursday evening near our home in Kenosha County on the Fox River. In just over an hour we had put 39 White bass in our basket and all SLOBS !!! Was a great time. And just made me more excited about getting to Fremont and the Wolf River today for our Good Friday outing. I figured that if the White bass were here at home on the Fox River already then the action on the Wolf should be EXCELLENT !!!! Based on all conditions and scouting reports I have heard over the past week (weather, river conditions temp and water level, spawn progress, ect.) I had a gut feeling we were going to be in for and EXCITING time at Fremont. Well Excitement we did have but it was not created by fish. Let me tell you about our Fremont Wolf River Good Friday EXCITEMENT !!!!

Well our GOOD FRIDAY fishing trip to Fremont and the Wolf River went like this..

Left home at 5am. Nice morning. About 50 degrees. As we got closer to Fremont it got somewhat cloudy, and almost looked like rain. None was forecast for today. Actually forecast was for GREAT day. 53 degrees at 8am. By noon up to 69 degrees, and up to 75 degrees by 4pm and SUNNY !! Got to Fremont about 8am. Stopped at the bait shop couple doors away from the Bank (forgot the name) and met a very nice guy by the name of PAT outside. Talked fishing with him for about 15-20 minutes. Very Friendly. He reminded me of the Fremont I remembered as a kid. Very friendly and courteous. Willing to take the time to talk to a stranger about the local fishing. Couldnt wait to get out after talking to Pat. Went in the bait shop and again met a couple of friendly women working the store that was more than willing to help out a couple of strangers and talk about the local fishing and offer some suggestions as well as launches (acutally one only 2 doors down nex to the bank. They advised the fishing was still not HOT but a few walleyes were being caught jigging and on wolf river rigs and minnows mainly. Not much for crappies and white bass. Not a great forecast but again this could change from day to day, minute to minute. Again couldnt wait to get on the water.

Went to another bait shop around the corner (Ma's Bait & Tackle). People not as friendly as the other shop (but was alot busier) maybe that is why. Too busy selling to talk. But not a bad or rude place. They also confirmed previous fishing reports. Kinda rough going and not sure why. Everything is just right for prime fishing. Could happen any time I thought I HOPE IT IS TODAY !!!!

Well so far nothing but friendly, nice people. JUST as I rememered Fremont from my childhood trips with Dad and Grandpa. Cant wait to get on the water. So off to the launch. We pull up to the launch and my oldest son says to me Dad this looks real familar. I have never taken my son to Fremont before so I didnt think much of it. But when he saw at the launch "Home of the Webfooters" Water Ski team he said YEP DAD I WATER SKIED HERE IN A COMPETITION ONCE. I forgot that as a member of the Aquanuaut water ski team from Twin Lakes (near where we live) he had come up here once to water ski. HOW IRONIC. Now we were gonna launch at the viewing stand for the ski shows.

NICE LAUNCH and parking across the street. Great for my small 14' boat. Finally get out on the water at 9 or so. The clouds broke up at about 10am and it did nothing but warmed up all day long. Fished till 12:30 all north of the Hwy 110 bridge to just north of partridge lake. Then went and had lunch at the Fremont Hotel (GREAT FOOD) !! Then back out on the water. Fished till about 4pm from the Hwy 110 bridge to the Gala Resort and Campground. Was 80 degrees when we left at 4pm.

Well here is a recap on our fishing:

NOT A FISH !!! Just a couple hits on wolf river rigs with floaters and minnows. Jigs NOT A THING !!! Youngest son had something BIG on. It just hugged the bottom and pulled. Never saw it, broke the line. BUMMER.. We used everything. Jigs, Minnows, Floaters and Wolf River Rigs, Night Crawlers.

Actually only saw one small sauger caught in a boat ALL DAY. Saw one guy fishing from the docks in town caught 2 small perch a sucker and a carp. He was using night crawlers. We fished from 9-4. Started North of Partridge Lake and drifted south to Gala Resort and Campground, anchoring occasionally along the way and redriting many sections many times.

Lots of fisherman on the water. Well Maybe not all of them true fisherman. I couldnt believe how INCONSIDERATE the majority of them were. Of course we only had a 14' boat with 9hp motor and most of these other guys had 18-20' or longer boats with a minimum of 100hp and most had 200hp and up.

And none of these guys know boating laws. I think these boats only have one speed. FULL SPEED AHEAD. And these guys dont know what SLOW NO WAKE MEANS or safe operating distances between boats. I saw the lives of me and my 2 boys flash before my eyes on more than one occasion where one of these guys passed by us within 20 feet at full speed. We actually took on water a couple times from their wakes.

THIS WAS BY FAR NOT THE FREMONT I REMEMBERED FROM MY CHILDHOOD. But then again when I was a child everyone had a 14-16' boat with a motor no bigger than a 25hp.

******* THIS PART OF FREMONT NEEDS TO CHANGE ************ WHERE IS THE ENFORCEMENT FROM DNR OR BOAT PATROL ?? ******
Talked with an older guy out in a boat and he said someone was killed in the area last year in a boating accident because of this kind of boating operation. Why isnt this river patroled better ?? This may be what keeps me from being a very infrequent visitor to the Fremont area.

Still very much enjoyed our time together fishing and may actually try it again but will definately not go anytime there is another tournament. And that is not saying that most of the IDIOTS were tournament people but clearly alot were. Couldnt believe there was even someone water skiing and went by us also within 20feet of our boat.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE BOATING LAWS AND REGULATIONS ??? WHERE IS THE DNR ??? Sure would be good to see some enforcement out there.

******************** SAFETY SHOULD BE PRIORITY NUMBER ONE *********************************

Well anyway, we left Fremont about 4pm and were somewhat disappointed about our catch so far today at Fremont but clearly we were not ready to be SKUNKED !!! Not on Good Friday. No way, cant let that happen. So when we got home about 6:30pm we put the boat in on the Fox River again and headed back to our local "honey hole" and guess what we ended up with 20 SLOB WHITE BASS !!!

WHAT A WAY TO END ANOTHER GOOD FRIDAY FISHING TRIP WITH MY BOYS !!!! We are already talking about where to go next year on Good Friday. Well I just hope there will be many good fishing days with my boys between now and next Good Friday.

Even a bad day of fising is GREAT WITH MY BOYS !!!!

Any comments are welcome.

HAPPY EASTER and a THANK YOU to all the very nice and FRIENDLY people of Fremont and the local area. A special thank you to PAT, you started our day to Fremont off right (Good luck in all your fishing and hunting experiences). And also to all of you who had posted a reply to my original request for the fishing forecast and suggestions to make our Good Friday Fishing trip a sucessful and memorable one, and that is was. Again thank you all, and hope to be back there again some day.
