Do not know fo full list of standings Van Oss brothers lead fishing tourney Tops after day one with 15.78 pounds By Eric Quintanilla of The Northwestern As the Otter Street Fishing Club's 26th annual tournament opened Saturday morning, 327 teams embarked on a race to see who was the best angler on Lake Winnebago. After one day of the tournament, the current leaders are brothers Dave and Eugene Van Oss with a combined weight of 15.78 pounds. "We had a pretty good day today and hopefully we can do it tomorrow," pro fisherman Dave Van Oss said. "Being in the lead the first day is exciting and fun but it's also intimidating because a lot of the time the leaders don't win the tournament. It's a good feeling but also makes us very apprehensive. It's a two-day tournament and you have to catch fish tomorrow too." With the field stocked full of local anglers who grew up fishing the lake, the first day was indicative of just how tight a race it will be. Everyone wants to take home the $13,000 first-place prize and is willing to use every fishing skill at their disposal to do it. "I think today went smooth," director of the tournament Jim Gibson said. "I just was talking to some fishermen who came over to congratulate us. They said they've fished all the tournaments and this is the smoothest tournament that they've been in. In 26 years we've taken a lot of the mistakes out." While the Van Oss brothers managed to bring in the largest overall haul of day one, it was Todd Rieder who brought in the largest fish when he brought back a 7.86-pound walleye. The catch helped him stay in contention for the overall tournament as he and his partner finished the day in 11th place with 12.56 pounds. "Todd Rieder is gonna win a 15-horse four-stroke long shaft engine for that fish," Gibson said. "If it's the largest fish and it holds up tomorrow, we're gonna mount that fish for him free of charge." While the tournament has brought anglers from all over in the past, this year's field is stocked with local fishermen. The top seven teams' walleye total is only separated by one pound. The second and final day of the tournament will see boats begin launching at 5:30 a.m. today and begin weighing them in at 2 p.m. "You never know who is going to win," Gibson said. "We used to have some of the pros from the big tournaments here. These locals are good fishermen and this is their water. They know what they're doing and out-fish some of the pros. There are no favorites. She's rough out there. No favorites just hard fishermen and a little luck."

Member Posts: 2567 Location: Manitowoc, WI | A great Day to be a fisherman Brothers Troy and Mike Day tops at Otter St. Tourney By Mike Krumrei of The Northwestern The weather may have been better for picnics and family softball games on Saturday, but the westerly winds and over cast skies on Sunday were more suited for walleye fishing. Twin brothers Troy and Mike Day have been fishing in the Otter Street Walleye Tournament for the last 10 years, but this year it finally paid off with the pairs' first place finish in the 2006 competition. The Days were in 17th place after Saturday's weigh-in with a total weight of 15.40 pounds. Then on Sunday, the duo brought in six more walleyes to bring their two-day total to 27.08 pounds. "Being cloudy always helps (the walleye bite)," Mike Day said. "The water has been so clear, because of all of the zebra muscles." Mike Day also said that he and his brother were fishing along rock beds in about a mile area. The Days were successful in the Otter Street Tournament despite a walleye season that has been tough on the anglers thus far. "It's been a really bad year (for walleyes)," Mike Day said. "The weather has been up and down, and the water temperatures have been up and down." While all of the competitors in the tournament love fishing they all wouldn't mind taking home the first-place payout. The brothers will split a winning purse of over $13,000. "I didn't quite believe it at first," Troy Day said. "I kind of had to let it sink in." Troy Day, who is an accountant by day, doesn't have any immediate plans to splurge on anything major with his share of the prize money. "We will probably put some away for future tournaments," he said. The Day twins were not the only ones who walked away happy from the Otter Street Walleye Tournament. Todd Reider and Travis Puls each earned prizes for the two biggest fish in the tournament. Reider caught his Saturday, almost straight out of the entrance of Miller's Bay. Reider's fish weighed in at 7.68 pounds, definitely a high mark that held up into Sunday's weigh in. Puls' fish was 7.06. Both won a 15-horsepower Mercury motor. Additionally, Reider will have his fish mounted free of charge by Fur Reel Taxidermy. In the two days of fishing there were over 1,900 fish caught in the tournament, with a great majority of them being returned safely to the waters of Lake Winnebago. On Saturday there were 1,023 walleyes caught with 65 percent of them released. "We've had higher (percentages of fish released,)" Tournament director Jim Gibson said. "You have to take into consideration the pounding (the fish) took yesterday (in the choppy waters). "Walleyes stress very easily." Exact numbers on Sunday's catch were not available. Gibson said that there were over 900 walleyes caught and 75 percent of those returned to the water.

Member Posts: 14 | It looks as if they didn't renew the rights to Otterstreetfishingclub.com, which used to be the website where you could view the results in PDF form. I would certainly like to know where to get ahold of the PDF file (or results for that matter). They were handing them out at the event, so I know it exists. Maybe I will give Jerry's bar a call.
