I had the pleasure of spending the last 10 days on a beautiful northern MN lake with my 3 & 5 year-old boys and had one of the best times of my life.

After several days of very successful crappie and sunnie fishing, Max landed his first northern. His excitement brought back some strong memories of fishing on that same lake when I was his age. It was a pretty impressive catch, 4# line with a jig/waxworm on a 28" ice fishing rod. The next night he landed his second pulling a Rattlin Rap with one of dad's casting rods. I was pretty proud to see them do so well and had so much fun helping them catch fish I couldn't have cared less if I got a line wet.

I was sad to see all the BS going on in regards to Purple Skeeter when I returned. I had been reminded of what fishing is all about on our vacation only to see that some people have really lost sight of the sport's true value.

Great pic, Viking. Brings back some memories to me as well.

I remember trips to an Eagle River lake when I was that age. Didn't catch anything but sunnies and perch, but it was fun! I also remember going out on Bago a few times in a 14' Mirro with a 9.9 Chrysler. Caught my first walleye just out from Clarence's on the south end! I used to take that same boat, and put on top of my Granada when I got back from the Air Force in 78. That boat ultimately turned into a 16' Mr Pike, one of the originals, with a 50 Merc.

Viking, glad you enjoyed the time spent with your children. Sounds like you all had a great time. I also have boys that are 5 and 3 years old. They love being in the boat and also like to fish. The look on the 5 yr olds face the day he caught his first fish (18 1/2" largemouth) will be embedded in my mind for life. Can't wait til he becomes my tourney partner.
