Member Posts: 1195 Location: Orland Park, IL | Tried a 30 lb mushroom. No dice. Tried a rickter, no dice. Tried a navy style, not the big thick one, but the thin, almost fold over one, no dice. I may have to toss my old elgin 12 down for a good anchor. Then again, some days you just cant anchor I guess. Neighbor hasnt used an anchor in 20 years. He says leave it at home. May have to.

Mark, You will need 2-30lbs river anchors to hold that big rig in place. Shackle, chain, and 100 foot 1/2" line will do the trick. May sound like overkill , but I hate when the wind blows me loose. About $150 and your sittin still. ![]()

Member Posts: 168 | I have a 28# rictor with 5 foot of chain on it and then 100 foot of rope. This holds my 17 foot boat with walk through windsheild (sail) very well in rough water. Does not hold well in sand though. Chris

I can hold on Mille Lacs (which is much worse than Bago ever gets, with a 9lb Water Spike.

Member Posts: 1195 Location: Orland Park, IL | How important is this chain thingy? Been hearin it alot. What purpose does it serve? May test the chain theory. Big rig, please RSS, a couple feet bigger than yours.

Member Posts: 168 | The chain will help it lay on the bottom and hook up better. I also use a rubber bungee cord to take some of the shock out of the line. I think that helps a lot. Chris

Jayman - 7/20/2006 5:59 PM Mill lacs gets worse than 'Bago? now that's funny..... A lake that is 1/3 the size will never get worse than the bigger lake! I have been on both in 30 plus MPH winds, and it's not even close. For the record it's Mille Lacs

Rounder than Bago, and no ledge on one side to block some of the east wind. But you put a big wind on Bago, and you gots trouble!

Komo, go to Fleet and buy (2) 27lb navy anchors. Then go to west marine and buy rope off the roll and not from a package. They have some real thick stuff there that is real stretchy. Get 100-150ft for each anchor. I fished reefs with my 20ft triton and have NEVER not been able to anchor because of wind. The truth be told, most guys anchor out the front and that is NOT the correct way to anchor. One out the front and one out the back. It is safer, you won't take on water and your ropes will always hold and you can position your boat easier. Just make sure to keep the track clean so the anchor can tip as much as possible. The chain does help but is not necessary and makes it more of a pain to work with. I live on Bago by the way and they even hold on deep reefs with small rocks like Genes on a huge blow day. The real secret is the rope, it costs a bunch but is worth its weight in gold. If you don't think anchors in a boat is important, find a different hobby.

I use a 15lb Digger Anchor and I love it. I have a 19 ft glass boat with windshields and it wil hold my boat on Devils Lake in 30 mph winds broadside in 25 FOW over clay. I have never had problems hooking up. No need for a chain either. Rule of thumb is 3-5 ft of rope out/FOW.

Member Posts: 794 Location: Elgin, Illinois | Mark, I always had trouble holding in wind, current, etc with my tall WT.... I had an "old man" out with me on the Mississippi and he got frustrated because I did not know how to work with anchors... He made me pull up and he took over and straightened me out... 1st....lots of wind, lots of rope.... 2nd, set your bow anchor where you want it then let out an addititional 75 feet + depth (I keep a 100 ft rope marked in ten foot increments on each anchor and I have an extra 100 foot for this step) Now set your stern anchor out where you want it and then take up the extra rope on the bow anchor and let out rope on the stern at the same time... His rule was depth plus 50 -75 feet depending on the wind and current stronger wind, current use the rule of 3 ... 50 feet plus 3 times the depth.. This keeps the anchors pulling horizontal. Now for really bad wind current... There is an additional ring/shackle on my anchor lines 20 feet above the anchor... I have two 10 lb river anchors that get hooked on at that point to hold the anchor rope down and add two more edges... Oh, and yes, I use chain above the anchors... both are 20 # Naval anchors. Richters do not hold all that well in sand and mud. Hope you understood that info. Edited by hgmeyer 10/13/2006 2:16 PM

Member Posts: 86 | Anchoring a large boat is difficult. I like to anchor off the bow in big wind. I add another cleat nearer to the tip of the bow so I can use different lengths of the rope. If you use most boat’s factory cleats (on the side of the bow) the boat anchors a little sideways and catches more of the waves and the force can make the anchor let go. I have 150 ft of rope and this will hold by 20 ft Crestliner always, but it may not hold the first time so I just re-anchor. 100 ft is not enough for big wind and a big boat. Water spikes are light and great in boulders but don’t hold well in rivers and mud. I use the Navy 28 lb for mud and rivers. Your “anchor mate” will not like you after lifting the 28 lb 30 times. In tournaments I plan to anchor I like strong amateurs for my draws!
