OK, so we all whine about alot of things in life, and competition, and life, and gas costs, and, and, and,..... well you get it.

Lets all post one good thing we learned this past fishing season.

I learned that catching fish IS fun. Fishing with my sons, 12 and 18, and long time friend, 51, on the bay many times this year, showed me what I seemed to take for granted. They had way way way to much fun catching lots of eater sized walleyes and bragging about how many they caught later. I learned to slow down and smell the fishes.

I learned that taking little time away from work to fish with my Wife or Sons isn't a criminal act. Still feels like it some days, but I'm working on getting over that.

I learned that most of the FLW and PWT Pros are true gentlemen, and ambassadors of the sport. Anyone who says otherwise doesn't know 'em like I do.

I learned that it isn't worth the wasted effort to get all cranked up about a really mean and untrue online comment. People can be mean, but I don't have to.

I learned that the Muskies out there are still ready to smash Keith's top water plug. He has two little boys, and can't fish Muskies much as a result, yet the only time we were able to get out this year he got a good one, as usual.

I learned that fishing with my boy is more fun if I dont fish. You really cant take it all too serious. Sometimes a "nice day on the water" doesnt include fish.

Most of the folks I met on the FLW ARE gentlemen, but not all.

And I fished with a TON of people. Always good to have someone new in the boat. Sometimes helps think a little bit different.

And when you buy a FAMILY license, it means the family fishes. So the wife, boy and me. Nice to be on the water.

i also learned to slow down at work. spend more time with my kids and family lost a second parent and at age 39 i have decided that life doesnt stop and goes too fast. it may come to an end too early. my kids are 13 and 16 and i have realized i only have a few more years of there attn. before thy get more and more involved in life and responsibuility. i choose to slow down a bit. i have learned that when you are down there are very few people you can count on . make sure you take care of the people who are close as they will stick by you. lots of freinds is nice but family and the few good ones is all we need. oh and jigging for walleyes is way more fun than trolling if you get better at it. either way i still love both. i have learned that fish will never talk to me and tell me what they want. but.... i am working on my fish mind reading skills in hopes of someday making contact..

I learned to think outside the box a little more for walleyes.

I believe it takes a LOT of positive energy to overcome the negative and disbeliefs of the world.

POSITIVE ENERGY!

Sometimes you have to just enjoy what is biting. You still enjoy the same comraderie comparing sheeps, carp. cats and eyes.
2nd item: I used to catch bigger fish when I had smaller boats
Take care,

Many of the sentiments already expressed about about kids and family reflect some of the things I've learned this season. Enjoy the moments with your kids and other family members. In June I spent two weeks at our family cabin fishing crappies and northerns with the kids and had the most fun I've had fishing since my grandmother taught me how to fish on that same lake.

The other thing I learned is that a big, fancy boat is no substitute for time on the water and attention to detail. I caught 400+ walleyes on Bago this summer in my 14'/18hp while guys in their expensive rigs were asking me how I was catching fish. However, I would trade my 14'er for a bigger rig anytime.

I don't think there's enough room to list all the things I learned this year, but here's a couple important ones.

I finally got to see how my Dad felt when he saw me catch my first fish. My son caught is first fish this summer (crappie) at just a shade under three years old. I look forward to my daughters first fish and my soon-to-arrive baby's first fish.

I learned that having a Great Dealer, is often more important than finding the best deal on a boat. I got to witness a couple people I know go for that "Steal" of a deal, and wind up with lots of problems. I have to give a BIG thanks to Bob at Mr. Marine for taking care of me this year and suppling the "soda" at Merc Nationals. He's a great guy and a great dealer.

I learned that tournament fishing never goes as planned. It's a rollercoaster ride of "ups" and "downs". Some of the best things happen when you least expect it. No matter what the outcome, you have always learned something.

Good idea for a subject Denny!

I went back to just enjoying my time on the water. Regardless if I am catching or not. The aesthetics of just being out is worth the time. Catching is the icing on the cake. This may sound weird, because I do spend an immense amount of time on the water following/running the PWT, but that is work. It is different. I had such limited time this summer with ten events, that I made the effort to grab the black lab and boat everytime I got home and just spent a day on the water. It was so good. Fished for whatever was biting. And yes, that included carp on Lake Oahe after the Mobridge event. We all take for granted the simple pleasures that are aound us. It was good to enjoy them again.

I learned that the size of fish isn't everything, I think the smile says it all.

Tomich,
Yup, that's a great picture. Those memories are stronger for me than winning a tournament, any day.

One of the most positive experiences of my life. First fish for my oldest son Ryan. 18 3/4" Largemouth. I think he was about 3.

The "positive" of the moment is the experience I had last weekend...

My 25 yr old son has come to the dance fully prepared...

He started fishing with me at 4 yrs old... He started hunting about 7 and shooting at game at around 11. He was all about "getting something" for years...

This last weekend we did poorly on the Mississippi River... At the end of the day, we put the boat back in the garage... I said; "sorry we didn't do better"

He replied; "we did great!... got to spend three days fishing with you and we had a great time... I don't care that we didn't catch anything!"

I could tell that he meant it.. Chalk one up to a successfull life for me... The rest is gravy from here on out... He gets it! The world is in equilibrium... That is what I learned from my Dad and now he has learned it from me...

The pics of you guys and yours kids are great... a great beginning... Just keep the carrot in front of them and they will learn it.

The most positive thing for me is the people I have met and fished with in this great sport. There is no source of better people than the community of dedicated fishermen. Got to get back to grilling venison and wild turkey. I thank God for the joy of the harvest and its consumption.

I learned that I have much more fun at home than on the road. Spending time with my little guy in the duck blind is my favorite thing of all.

No question about it, "MEMORIES" are the key things always in my mind.
Remembering those days of growing up and being in the boat and field with my father, who now his memories and my memories converge and missing him a lot.
So guys its about enjoying those things close to us, indeed again another
special Thanksgiving for all.
Good luck and take care always,
Marty
