Subject: 2004 150 optimax

I have been having the same problem with my 150 opti since may. The motor alarm goes off and goes to guardian mode. turn motor off and back on, it will work. Only goes off between 2000-3000rpm. I can run below it or wide open no problems. Had the following done at dealer. 1. replace impeller (2x), replace plugs, oil , lower unit, fuel filter, as done in 2005. Dealer also replace throttle sensor and overheat sensors. Dealer stated the computer has shown several diffeent codes as the problem. Just took it out several days ago after overhaeat sensors replaced, same problem! dealer stated they will have to get merc tech to look at motor. any suggestions?

Thanks

New dealer... Seems like you have been paying for guesses... Maybe it's the muffler bearings or the left handed smoke bender for the scravits gear... Or the blinker fluid is low...

Seriously, sounds like they have been swapping parts out with your wallet or Merc's warranty without really having a clue. I would think they could download the codes and get help from Mercury if that was confusing them without a Tech looking at it... Seems more like a lack of something else...

If you have a kicker fuel line coming off the main fuel line, try disconnecting the kicker. The kicker bulb check valve may be failing. When this happens, the main motor starts sucking air through the kicker. This happened to my 06 225 opti. Worth a shot and a cheap fix.

I assume you mean they will get a Mercury Regional Tech Rep to look at it.
I'm sure they have Mercury trained technicians ...in house.

The codes should be the key. Since we don't know what codes showed up, it would be difficult to come up with an accurate answer.

I have a 150 opti as well and had almost exactly the same problem you are describing. They also went through a very similiar trouble shooting procedure, replacing the two sensors, and impeller. They went out and test ran it and got alarms again. In the end, and what I believe was the whole problem in the first place was one of the screens (inlet) maybe, was obstructed with gook that was probably weed or something. You might check that. Hope this helps.

hgmeyer summed up my feeling with the experince when they handed me an 800 dollar bill:

I'm not complaining, they did their best and spent time on the phone with Merc, but that's kinda what happened. Also, I had asked to replace the bottom plugs (which are so tough to get at) while they had the lower cowling off. They forgot...........

Hope you get it worked out.

GL's motor should be under warranty, Greg, so not sure they are using his money at this point. This can be frustrationg though, so maybe some more info would help. Does it go into guardian mode right away, when it is still cold, or does it only happen after idling for a while, and then trying to go.

My 135 Opti did this, after it was warm. While an impellor helped, it would still happen on occaision. It turned out there was some mud dried up inside the water passage of the compressor, and it would set off the temp alarm up there. A good flush of the motor broke up the mud, cleaned it all out, and it was better after that.

thanks for all the info. I have not had my boat out to test it again. Replaced both primer balls for the motors and again flushed the motor. I will check the screens.I will try at first running the big motor without the kicker line connected. hope this takes care of it..........

The alarm only goes off after it has been running and between 2000-3000rpm. So far mercury has covered everything, motor just went out of warranty.

The dealer stated regarding the alarms. Some alarm(s) were for overheat. No code? and throttle sensor.

thanks

Check with your dealer about warranty on this ongoing problem. If it is not solved to your satisfaction within the warranty, they should continue with the warranty coverage until it is resolved.

Had the boat out for the first time this year. Again the #$%^ alarm went off! I was thinking of driving the motor into the rocks and get some insurance money for it. I did notice that my kill switch was not working. I would switch "off" and the motor kept running. I shut the motor off, reached behind the throttle, and moved some wires. The kill switch then worked. The alarm also did not come on. Does anyone know if this could make the alarm go off? I will try to get ahold of mercury on Monday myself before taking the motor in.

Thanks

Be sure to check your anti-siphon valve at the gas tank. The companies that manufacture the plastic tanks leave all sorts of dried up pieces of glue etc floating around in the tank, and they can get lodged in the anti siphon valve restricting the fuel flow in certain RPM ranges, depending on how it is wedged in there.
